Hi All,

Do folks working with OER textbooks have any suggestions for a Canadian print-on-demand publisher to use for print copies of these textbooks?  I have print copies of BCcampus texts but I'd like additional texts to use as demo copies for OER presentations.  (I'm also checking with our campus print shop but I'd like to know of other options.)

Cheers,

Jessica Norman

Hi,

I use lulu.com and createspace (amazon) for mine. Lulu is slightly more expensive, slightly better quality, and a bit faster on setup; createspace, since it distributes through amazon, is a lot more convenient for students. Both will make the books available for purchase to the public, but lulu lets you order any number of personal copies before you make it available.

Hi Jessica,

I have a Canadian company that I use and they deliver very good quality at pretty good unit prices. The company is Rapido (fitting!) and they are based in Montreal. My rep is Yann and he can be contacted here: y.j...@rapido-books.com (647) 995-3812. I do a ton of printing every year at a variety of locations, though, so let me know if you have questions about how to get the best deal because it is highly dependent on the specifications of your project.

All the best,

Richard, I have also used Lulu.com for my textbook "ICT Sustainability". It works well, but I suspect whatever system you use, there will still be the same tedium of getting a book ready for publication. I produced a paperback, hardback, PDF and ePub edition via Lulu, plus a Kindle edition via Amazon. These are all made from the same set of HTML files, one per chapter. I found the paperback and PDF most popular (along with the free web version). However, most students seem to be happy with the free e-book they get in their instution's Learning Management System. The three institutions which have run the course (ACS, ANU and Athabasca University) all use Moodle, so the Moodle book module is used. Students can get a chapter, or the whole book, in PDF from Moodle. My blog posts on producing books: http://blog.tomw.net.au/search/label/LuLu
