OneRoster API Info

I don't know why I didn't think to come here sooner...

We use a product from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt called MyHRW for some of our ELA resources.  The plugin they set up with us a couple of years ago doesn't seem to be working properly, and their preferred method of getting data from PowerSchool to HMH is via a oneRoster integration.  

We are also using Unified Classroom with PowerSchool and I was able to get a URL, Key and Secret from UC, but those don't seem to work on the Houghton Mifflin side of things. I called PowerSchool tech support to see if there was some way to configure this on the SIS side and they didn't seem to be of any help other than to tell me usually the vendor updates their plugins.

HMH support is pretty abysmal. Have any of you used this particular product (MyHRW) from HMH and successfully done rostering via an API with PowerSchool or Unified Classroom?

We don't use the product but since ya never know what we might be asked to set up next I did a little digging. Looks like HMH has partnered with ClassLink for rostering its products. They have a lite version they are offering free (until June 30th 2022) that only rosters HMH products.

Kinda lame that they'd make you subscribe to another product to register their product. I imagine there are other options. We use Clever and GG4L to automate rostering where we can both are free but neither of those have MyHRW listed.

I don't have experience with ClassLink but maybe it can get you up and running without additional cost for now while you look into other solutions and it looks like you can deal with them directly instead of waiting on HMH. Good luck, hopefully someone else has a better answer for you.

I feel your pain!

 

MyHRW/HMH/Think Central is a pain to get in sync with PowerSchool and we struggle with it every fall.

 

Based on what I heard this fall HMH is partnering with ClassLink, which we don’t use. I’m not sure what OneRoster is.

Sorry that I don’t have anything useful to contribute, but I did see an opportunity to let out some of my frustration that I feel towards the HMH/TC system and how they manage student data.

 

This is part of an email from a ClassLink rep:

 

In case you hadn’t heard, HMH has transferred its rostering and SSO technical services business to ClassLink. As part of this expanded partnership, select school districts including Medford will receive ClassLink Roster Server Lite. This tool automates rostering exclusively for HMH products. This is free to you until June 30th, 2022 and will continue to be available to you after that for a nominal fee.  

 

If you would like to learn more about this integration, please let me know.  I will be happy to show you the entire ClassLink portal or Jenn Lally (in copy) can get you started on Roster Server Lite.

Thanks Jared & Robin, I'll look at ClassLink.

It's interesting that Jenn Lally is part of that team. She was our integration person from HMH when we first started to set up MyHRW. I'd heard she left HMH. I wonder if because their rostering stinks she helped start a new company (not sure how old ClassLink is) or joined them and now works to make her former product work?

We have also been experiencing many issues with HMH and have been in the tech support circle of doom. However they have finally (after a week) been able to get the PowerSchool plugin working and rostering has been updated. Still working out some minor issues but can't say it's been fun dealing with them.

The my.hrw.com roster sync utility is actually pretty impressive in my experience.  You don’t have to use their ONEROSTER config either. We are setup with an sFTP that we schedule files to be dropped into nightly.  This is their ‘Simple File Format’ option. 

 

I’m using a custom view/procedure in MSSQL so the specifics of our setup won’t be useful to you but I can say that the method works using the same old text files we used to send them.
