I know our agenda is full. but Madame Presídent suggest I submit this anyway:

As previously outlined I propose that we purchase a set of sound equipment from Saramonic. This kit would include a two broadcasting units consisting of  a clip on microphone box and attached lavalier microphone option, and a receiver unit for for a  high quality DSLR camera with mini plug input.  ($200) In addition I would also purchase 2 receivers for smart phones or other video devices. 1 unit would be a USB-C commotion, the other an Apple “Lighting” connection. ($80 each). This set would cost   a total of $360 + tax.  My Request is a motion for "up to $400 to cover high quality audio equipment for video recording."

This would be used to allow me to work with others to record interviews in person with hybridfizers and others.  I already have my own set.

To make this successful we would need volunteers in various areas of the country to work together to learn how use this equipment and best practices for recording an interview.  This presumes that participants already have a video device and a stabilizing unit such as a tripod.

It is my intention that this becomes a turnkey training opportunity.  Pleas consider becoming involved or recommending someone in your are to participate.

I will be glad to answer further questions via email or at our next Board of Directors meeting.  to minimize discussion time at our meeting please email questions to this list.

I am supportive this.  As everyone probably knows by now I have been involved in a project to record videos with the various garden owners to promote the 2022 AIS Convention.

It has been a challenge to to arrange a time to interview more than one garden owners in a day and coordinate it with the person that volunteered to be my cameraman.  We conducted three of the interviews on a less than desirable day, despite a weather forecast that was much better.  The result was interviews with an unacceptable level of wind noise.  I ended up going to a professional and he told me the videos were not salvageable and fortunately did not charge me a fee.

The end result is I have to do the three interviews all over again.  I did purchase some inexpensive video support equipment that should yield better results.

If I had what Neil purposes buying lended to me I could have saved myself a lot of time.

I would suggest that the request be for $600 to cover initial shipping and the cost of reshipping to the regional volunteers when appropriate.

It sounds like a very good idea, and I support it.  However, I think it would meet with more approval if it was presented along with some proposed or planned interviews, or projects that could show some more or less immediate need. Just a suggestion.

Hi Phyllis,

It certainly would have helped me for my 2022 convention garden interviews.  A little late for my interviews but something like that is an example.

A better example would be to interview some of the hybridizers for posterity.  An example was the most interesting program I remember was at the 2015 Portland Convention when Barry Blyth, Keith Keppel and Joe Ghio gave the program at the Tall Bearded Iris Society.  These guys are legends of the iris world. MIT would have been nice if someone recorded their program.

All three are in their 80’s now.  It would be nice to record each of them for posterity.

I agree totally.  Perhaps we should be lining up someone in Oregon and CA to do interviews with those hybridizers sooner than later.  I understood that there was a video of that panel discussion.  Is that not so?  My response was aimed at getting a positive vote by the board, by having specific projects in the works, or planned.

There is a list of questions that were used for printed interviews.  Actually an interview with Barry Blyth was put together into a PowerPoint with some slides from his garden years ago.  The interview was shown as a text Q ad A.  I am glad we have that.  Now lets make these more 21st century.

I will put together some questions as a guide as soon as I can find some time.  I am being held hostage in my garden by irises.

Let me start by asking you all:

Who would be good candidates to film the interviews?  I imaging someone who can set up two cameras or more on tripods to capture different angles.  The Audio only needs be on one camera, editing the video can be done with software.  I would offer some suggestions for framing.  Who ever does this needs to practice.

Who would be interviewed and who would interview them?  The absolute best situation would be a conversation between the “interviewee” and a friend as the interviewer.  Questions should me more” way.

I would like you all to suggest candidates for work on this: Videographers, interviewer and subjects.

Here are some questions, but I want others to suggest their own:

Tell us about your history in horticulture?
When did you first become interested in horticulture?  ...irises?  Which class(es0 do you enjoying working with the most?

Do you have a role model?

When did you first get involved in AIS?  Other groups?

Is there a cultivar in which you have the most pride?  Was there a “WOW!’ moment that you recall when seeing a particular cultivar?

Talk about an award that you won...

What percentage of your seedlings do you introduce?

Do you have a goal that you have achieved, or one that you still haven’t quite made you’d share with us?

In which contributions to AIS are you most proud?  Other organizations?

Many question will lead to an “explain that,” “why” or another follow up...

How’s that for a start?

Good thought John.  Should that be in a separate request/motion for $200 and then possibly make it an annual budget line item if usage dictates?

Hi Neil, is there any editing software associated with this equipment that needs to be included?

I have been using lightworks for the 2022 convention preview.  It is free.  You can import sound and videos and integrate together.  It is not too bad for something that is free.  I took video of my garden with the iphone and hohem gimbal to steady the shots.   Sound was taken inside (to avoid the winds).  I then integrated it together with lightworks.
