JUI will like to ENDORSE the advice and cautionary note being sounded by the British Foreign Minister, Philip Hammond, on the brewing crisis in the Niger Delta. You cannot go and intimidate a man in his compound because he wants socioeconomic justice for the economic exploitation of his compound and the survival environment. In fact, like Yar'Adua did, Buhari should:
1. Take an audit of the progress made in the Marshall Plan for the Niger Delta since 2008 when Yar'Adua signed an accord that was implemented by Jonathan; the accord covered community development, environmental clean-ups, and education/welfare and human capital development;
2. Find out if new or old militants are involved in these new attacks in the Niger Delta, and who the new leaders are;
3. Investigate whether the new leaders and groups have legitimate claims vis-a-vis the previous issues in the Niger Delta that should have been tackled significantly by now.

Again, the saying that "a stitch in time, saves nine" should be the right path of wisdom in handling these brewing terror wahallas in any society. Take care. JUI

Buhari Needs To Address Grievances In Niger Delta – UK

Updated May 15, 2016

The swamps of the southern Niger Delta have been hit by a series of attacks on pipelines and other oil and gas facilities that have reduced Nigeria’s output by 300,000 barrels a day, closed a major export port and two refineries.

Nigeria has moved in army reinforcements to hunt the militants but British Foreign Minister, Philip Hammond, said that Buhari needs to the deal with the root causes because a military confrontation could end in “disaster”.

Crude sales from the Delta account for 70 percent of national income in Africa’s biggest economy but residents, some of whom sympathize with the militants, have long complained of poverty.

“It’s obviously a major concern,” Hammond told reporters on the sidelines of a regional security conference in Abuja when asked about the situation.

“The idea that your answer is by moving big chunks of the Nigerian Army to the Delta simply doesn’t work,” he said, adding that the Army did not have the capacity while fighting Boko Haram jihadists in the north. “It won’t deal with the underlying issues.”

“Buhari has got to show as a president from the north that he is not ignoring the Delta, that he is engaging with the challenges in the Delta,” Hammond said.

Buhari is a Muslim from the north who has not visited the Christian Delta since taking office a year ago, something highlighted by a militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, which has claimed a string of attacks on pipelines.

The group has warned oil firms to leave the region within two weeks and says it is fighting for independence for the Delta. It has said it wanted a greater share of oil revenues and an end to oil pollution.

The attacks have driven Nigerian oil output to near a 22-year low and, if the violence escalates into another insurgency, it could cripple output in a country facing a growing economic crisis.

Buhari, who has not commented about not visiting the Delta, has extended a multi-million dollar amnesty signed with militants in 2009 but upset them by ending generous pipeline protection contracts. He also cut the amnesty budget by around 70 percent, which partly funds training for unemployed.

Pronto!!!

Buhari should carry out his prophecy of DOOM by moving to phase 2 of his dogs and baboons strategy. This messianic military thug cannot deal with his northern Boko Haram, yet he wants to squash Niger Delta Boko Haram?

Buhari administration is a JOKE. Just funny people leading Nigeria's "best and brightest", Tufiakwa!

Stevek,
You cannot mix up all these issues you alluded to below;
First, JUI hopes he did not misunderstand you below; but if you believe [or harbor the slightest notion] that there is no legitimate Niger-Delta socioeconomic justice agitation or environmental issue that has escalated into crisis, you must live in Mars! Even the international community has independently verified the situation and crisis in the Niger Delta. Or are you suggesting that we should be in Iraq, Somalia, Maiduguri, Syria or Afghanistan before we can accept that the issues and crises there are legit? Na wa for you oo!
Secondly, JUI believes that a more close engagement of the Niger Delta people by the Feds [borrowing a leaf from late Prez Yar'Adua's play-book], rather than this military intimidation tactic, will reveal to the people and communities that the Fed Govt is already taking care of them through the 13% derivation and establishment of the Niger Delta ministry; these people should be closely monitored for how they spend that money in community development, environmental clean-ups, and people's empowerment. These are very measurable parameters.
Lastly, JUI thinks you should be more reflective in your interactions on this forum by now; doing the same Injan-kiri day-and-nite, by finding out what is wrong in other people, rather than telling us what you believe is right, has caused too much distractions on this forum. We should do better as we age and acquire wisdom! Take care. JUI

JUI,

You have good intentions but you miss issues by a country mile.

What socioeconomic justice are you talking about? What is the favored 13% favored derivation for the SS states about about? How much of that gets to these people that you think are destroying federal government property and polluting the environment for all in the region for 'socioeconomic justice for the economic exploitation'?

First, how do you know that these miscreants are doing the damage they are doing to their own neighborhood and country for the reasons you have stated? In fact, how do you even know that they are N'Delta indigenes?

Please, don't be like that Pronto!!! 'eye doctor' who diagnoses people from a distance for unknown ailments just because he wants to sabotage the Buhari administration in order for the Ebelechukwu to come back and restore his cancelled illegal contracts, claiming he is familiar with the aspirations of the N'Deltan just because he roamed about there for a little while 30 years ago!

Thank you Stevek for confirming the environmental disaster and human denigration in the Niger Delta; meanwhile few Nigerians are enjoying and freely looting the treasuries built up with the proceeds from the activities that have resulted in the mess in your neighborhoods!
We have to agree that 2 related issues have precipitated the crisis and rogue militancy we have in the Niger Delta today:
1. The erstwhile reluctance of the Nigerian govt to listen to the grievances, environmental pollution and economic injustice in the Niger Delta; just as some world powers created some of the notorious regional and global terrorists out of expediences of the times but the world is living with their excesses today, so did the arrogance and ineptitude of the previous Nigerian Govts create the Niger Delta militant culture that have gone rogue in the Niger Delta today. It will require a close engagement of legitimate people in the Niger Delta and the implementation of concrete and palpable developmental programs to complete wipe out the militancy culture from the Niger Delta. In fact, militancy is now a lucrative or pastime profession for some people.
2. Inadequate implementation and monitoring of developmental programs in the Niger Delta. JUI believes that a more close engagement of the Niger Delta people by the Feds [borrowing a leaf from late Prez Yar'Adua's play-book], rather than this military intimidation tactic, will reveal to the people and communities that the Fed Govt is already taking care of them through the 13% derivation and establishment of the Niger Delta ministry; these people in charge of Ministry, State and LG funds for developmental programs and services in the Niger Delta should be closely monitored for how they spend that money in community development, environmental clean-ups, and people's empowerment. These are very measurable parameters.
Thanks for not calling JUI names, or insinuating that JUI may be complicit in the looting of treasuries in the Niger Delta, in your last response. Take care. JUI

The place is horrible, in terms of lack of means of livelihood because of the pollution of the land and the air full of carcinogenic, neurotoxic, and teratogenic polyaromatic hydrocarbons in the air from flaring.

I am just saying that these punks are destroying these pipelines for a completely different and despicably selfish and ignorant reasons.

Yar'Ardua made the same mistake and made goons, like Tompolo, incredibly rich fools with changing anything in the N'Delta.

Stevek,
Give the above excerpted statement you made and the background relevant issues to your 5th Grade Grandchild, and JUI is assuring you that the Child will say: ""Grandpa Stevek, y're confusing yourself; take a rest from your nuisance in cyberspace."" Try it and tell us the outcome! Haha!!

Now, consider the following questions:
1. If socioeconomic injustice is a part and in fact the genesis of the rise of militancy in the Niger Delta, from which rogue militants emerged due to the delays in resolving the demands, what is the basis of lashing out at JUI?
2. Are the issues associated with socioeconomic injustice resolved? You just confirmed that they're still there; so why should socioeconomic injustice be off the table when the problems of the rogue militants are being discussed?
3. If the protracted feds' neglect, and the recent state and LG mismanagement or mishandling of environmental clean-ups, community development and people's socioeconomic empowerment are contributing to the delays in palpable developmental progress in the Niger Delta, should these issues not be highlighted as the factors feeding the continuing emergence of rogue militants in the areas in a dispassionate analysis?

Anyway sha, PRONTO has your number.............hahaha! But take the counsel of your Grandchild before you respond to this message. Take care. JUI

And did you read the 5 or so ultimatums that the newest militant group in the N'Delta in which only the last one - the last one! - spoke about socioeconomic injustice? One of them was even about releasing Kanu and the other was about leaving Jonathan alone (both of which were rated more important than N'Delta socioeconomic injustice).

And you thanked me from not abusing you in the very response you are responding to?
