Peter Obi should try and calm down sometimes and leave some of these rhetorics to less traveled, less educated or less exposed people.
We are not finished, and if he continues with such garrulousness, it will be his politics that will be finished.

Let him go and check.

As First Lady of America, Laura Bush, a former teacher and Librarian who graduated in 1973 with a Masters degree in Library Science from the University of Texas after a first degree in Education, used her background, experience and exposure to raise national awareness on library improvement across America.

To encourage reading at all ages, Mrs Bush instituted the annual National Book Festival at the National Mall in DC in 2001.
Even after leaving office, her foundation, the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries has continued in her tradition to support Libraries across America.
In May 2024 alone, the foundation awarded $1m in library grants to 200 school libraries from 40 states across the United States.

Wealthy families like the Astors and Carnegie are behind some of the largest libraries in America including the legacy New York Public Library which started with a endowment from Jacob Astor and continues to be recipient of millions of dollars in donations every year.

It is a good thing that the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is raising awareness on the sorry state of Nigeria's flagship library, the National Library of Nigeria.
I am consoled that we have a First lady who is passionate about libraries and books at a time when most are consumed with Rolls Royce cars, large mansions and plenty of jewelry.
My prayer is that this passion should continue to libraries in states and schools across Nigeria.

‘We are finished’ —  Peter Obi faults Remi Tinubu’s birthday donation request

‘We are finished’ —  Peter Obi faults Remi Tinubu’s birthday donation request
‘We are finished’ —  Peter Obi faults Remi Tinubu’s birthday donation request

Peter Obi and Remi Tinubu.

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has criticised First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s request that birthday well-wishers donate toward completing the National Library in Abuja, describing it as an indictment of Nigeria’s leadership priorities.

In a post on his X account on Sunday, Obi said while the First Lady’s appeal was “noble and selfless on the surface,” it exposed the failure of government to fulfill its responsibilities.

“I join millions of Nigerians in wishing Her Excellency, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, a happy birthday. May God Almighty, who has been with her all these years, grant her many more healthy, fruitful, and happy years,” Obi wrote.

“However, I was struck by irony reading her request: that instead of cakes or newspaper adverts, well-wishers should donate toward completing the National Library in Abuja.”

Obi argued that a nation should not rely on charity to build “the very temple of knowledge” while its leaders spend lavishly on luxuries.

“It is shocking that, in our present circumstances, while billions are easily found for jets, yachts, unused mansions, endless trips abroad, and other frivolities, the nation must rely on birthday donations to complete its own National Library,” he stated.

The former Anambra governor added that such priorities highlight a tragic neglect of education.

He said, “What kind of leaders waste trillions on luxury and vanity, while the National Library — our intellectual furnace — remains abandoned in the capital? Serious nations treat libraries as sacred; but here we reduce them to afterthoughts, begging bowls, or birthday tokens.”

Obi concluded that Nigeria’s progress depends on investing in education rather than vanity projects.

“If Nigeria will rise, it will not be on the wings of jets or the splendour of mansions, but on the strength of minds formed in classrooms and nourished in libraries. Until then, the lament remains true — we are finished,” he declared.

Oga Afis/GK,

Is it a funny coincidence that Peter Obi is reiterating the lies that his Obidiots like Nebu keep repeating.

It is a case of birds of the same feather in this instance.

How many 'temple of knowledge' did Peter Obi build with Anambra State's funds during his disastrous spell as Governor?
How much did he spend investing in companies that he has major stake in or is owned by his family?

Enu bobo yen n'run! (That guy's mouth and breath is smelling)!

Comment:
I'm afraid GK has failed to compare like with like on this occasion. Mrs Laura Bush did not raise money for purposes of renovating a project which maintenance falls squarely within the responsibility of the Federal Government. She raised money for purposes of establishing a foundation. And she did!

If the money being raised by the Nigerian First Lady, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu were for her foundation or charity purposes, I don't think Peter Obi or any other Nigerian for that matter would raise an eyebrow. According to the report, the purpose of her asking for donation from well wishers is for the  completion of the NATIONAL LIBRARY in Abuja - a project, I'm supposing, which should be the primary responsibility of the Federal Government of Nigeria. Haba!

If the Opposition should not criticise this abnormality, who else and what else?

Dare I say that Peter Obi's diatribe against the Government is very much in order! President Tinubu's Government should cut down on luxuries and frivolities and manage public money with utmost frugality. Embarrassing!!

That is what you have chosen to see, which is most unfortunate. What I appreciate about her effort is the fact that she is using her position to raise awareness on the state of the National Library.
It takes a woman who understands the value that libraries, books and a reading culture brings to our society to do what Madam Tinubu. That was a plus for me, even as ADC, Peter Obi and people like you are firing shots at her.
I wish all the First Ladies across local and state governments will follow suit.

Thank you.

PCO/GK,

One can be magnanimous enough to donate his or her birthday gift and well wishes to the national library or one can be thoughtless enough not to build a single library throughout his 8-year stint as a governor, yet magnanimous enough to invest state funds in his own and family-held businesses.........the fact is out there for all to see.

PCO, in his own case, keeps repeating himself like a broken record(LP).......a broken clock would have been better, at least a broken clock is still right twice a day!

Yatch, jet, mansions etc etc.....have been the go-to claim by PCO and that his accursed side-kick Obidiot, Nebu.

Ask them to provide factual evidence and facts that can be corroborated with figures, they will welch. They will either deflect the queries, conjure up Copilot responses and keep on reiterating the same falsehood.

GK, just let them be o!

Chief Okala is reading the newspaper upside down.
Mrs Tinubu is NOT “raising fund” for the National Library. She’s advising those sycophants trying to impress those leaders in government…..by sending expensive presents to them calling the near-bribery “donations or birthday presents”…….instead to send monies towards the National Library funding.
From 1999 to now, sycophants mostly in the president party, business people in the private sector always shower the president and First Lady with money and expensive gifts even cars and jewelry.
What Mrs Tinubu is saying is that if anyone plans to bring her gifts they should donate the equivalent in money to the National Library.

You and Obi can keep twisting all you want, the people know what she means.

Bros,

It is not even about them. I was not bothered when ADC complained about it. I only got worried when Peter Obi of all people, joined the noise making.

Libraries across Nigeria from Rivers state to that National Library in Abuja are in desperate need of intervention. Anybody who drives by that library must be worried except if the person does not value the place of libraries in our society.

I pray that many more Nigerians join the first lady in her campaign. Libraries and the reading culture in Nigeria are in a sorry state.

Madam Remi did right.

Thanks.

Nigerian governments  - federal and states have more than the resources to equip and maintain standard libraries and other tangible public assets in their loco parentis respectively. But instead of allocating budgets towards the maintenance, growth and development of these public structures, Nigerian governments (federal and states) prefer, instead, to waste public resources under their watch on frivolities and luxuries. In the process they allow the common assets to rot away. Shame!

As opposed to the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, Peter Obi was actually condemning the federal Government whose responsibility it is to maintain the NATIONAL LIBRARY for allowing its misplaced priorities to give birth to a sorry situation that the National Library has become, until the First Lady had to use her birthday anniversary celebration to campaign for money in order to complete work on the said NATIONAL LIBRARY, even when humongous sums of money have been wasted on acquisition of yacht, jet/s, building new designer residence for the VP and making numerous expensive overseas travels and what have you.

By every yardstick, Peter Obi's concern and diatribe against the Government is right on the money. It's justified!! I hope others will borrow a leaf. Meka
