A good number of Itsekiri people think they are Yoruba. Some are active in OPC.

Dr Kassim, it is not our place to “accept” or not accept Omarosa’s Yorubaness.

Her father told her she’s Yoruba with Itsekiri sub-Yoruba tribe, then she’s.
If we don’t “accept” her or we do, what does that mean “in her”, or to her as a member of the Yoruba she claims?
I really don’t think it matters if we accept or not accept her, it doesn’t change what she chooses to call herself.

Hi Charles;

We do not need to worry about which ethnic  group in Nigeria
(or more broadly in Africa) Omarosa wishes to identify herself with
considering that by the time Omarosa came around her Yorubaness
allegedly from her father side
would have been diluted several more times by her mother's (an African American)
lineage from the beginning of the slave trade until 1973 when she was born.

If she wishes, Omarosa could have a her DNA tested by 23&Me or Ancestry laboratories.
The best any of these labs can do is to tell what percentages of her genome are derived
from which geographic corners of the world and increasingly now with better data,
which ethnic group(s).

Let's just accept Omarosa as we accept all African-Americans and peoples of African ancestry

in her future endeavour!

Now that she is a Priest, I think she should become a Charismatic Prosperity Preacher--considering

Greetings All,

Here is a little point of information.
Interestingly, Omarosa says she is Yoruba.
"Omorosaonee; it’s a Yoruba name that means, ‘my beautiful child desired." -Omarosa

Is that really a Yoruba name or they worked the language backwards to arrive at the name..?

Dear All:

I heard from a conversation at a cocktail party last night that Omarosa Manigault-Newman’s mother was/is a Nigerian.

I thought her feistiness in the face of
adversity, notwithstanding her lack of credibility, might have been inherited from her partial Nigerian heritage.

After a cursory search this morning I was unable to confirm this cocktail rumour which may or may not be true.

Omarosa is the daughter of Mrs Theresa Marie Manigault (new Walker).

The first name Omarosa could have originated from Nigeria probably from any one of the SS ethnic groups including
Itshekri, Ishan, Edo etc.

It is also equally possible that Omarosa’s  enlightened and well educated African-American parents might have no recent genealogical connection to Nigeria. They could have simply researched African names and came up with Omarosa for their newborn daughter 44 years ago.

The question: Is Omarosa a Nigerian name?

I am eagerly waiting to be enlightened
on this subject.

Bye,

Ola

When slavery was abolished many people, mostly the Yoruba from the southwest of Nigeria, were brought to the new world as indentured servants. This people were adults and they know where they came from. Is it not possible that Omarosa’s distant ancestor was one of these

If one were to superimpose the Nigerian portion of that map on these Nigerian states

as well as on the followung map showing the Niger-Benue confluence:

One will then get a good picture of why you write below that:  "(they) claim to be Yoruba from the north (or northern Yoruba ) jbecause the present Kwara and Kogi states were once part of the old Northern Region . The capital of old Yoruba kingdom ( the defunct Oyo Empire ) was located  somewhere around the present Kogi State"..  In fact, if you draw a straight line through my Ekiti State, you will find that many parts of Ekiti State are more "Northern" than certain parts of Kogi, Benue and Taraba States.  Therefore we should make a distinction between the "political North" and the "geographic North" of Nigeria.

Kayode,

I agree that we have more than enough dishonest people in Nigeria that we should be afraid to import more. But any black man or woman whose ancestors were forcefully shipped out of Africa should have a right to claim and/or return to wherever he/she traces his/her ancestry to in Africa. That is more important than Omarosa being who she is, and more important than Itsekiri's relationship to Yoruba. Many Itsekiri people believe and claim what Omarosa claims: being Itsekiri-Yoruba. Stevek needs not be one of them.

By the way, we scold a child who misbehaved,  we don't throw him/her away. Omarosa has realized her mistakes. Her eyes are now clear.

However, Omarosaonee is not an Itsekiri or a Yoruba. She is not a Nigerian. Period. She is a Nigerian Wannabe. She is full of falsehood and deception. She is claiming Nigerian relationship for economic and political reasons.

She has been dismissed by Black America, because she an Uncle Tom who will do anything and say anything to get what she wants.

Nigeria does want or need dishonest people like that.

Philologically, linguistically and historically, the Itsekiri language is a dialect of the Yoruba language and some Itsekiri speaking people can be found in Ondo State, Niger Delta and Edo State Nigeria.

The Itsekiri language to the Yoruba language, is what Pidgin is to English language.

It's similar to the relationship between Igala language and Yoruba language. The Yoruba, Igala and Itsekiri languages are related and intertwined.

Kayode

Olola,

Don't get contaminated by the company you keep.

The Itsekiri are not Yoruba nor a subset of Yoruba. It is not up to Omarosaonee t determine that for the Itsekiri; she can adopt to be Yoruba, as an individual, if she so desires because nobody gives a rat's ass what she considers herself to be.

I am of Itsekiri ancestry and my hometown in Nigeria is Itsekiri homeland. And every Itsekiri I know will laugh at you if you call them Yoruba.

For one thing, even though the original Itsekiri are purported to have come from the Okitipupa area of Yorubaland hundreds of years ago, they have been so intermingled with the local population by marriage and acculturation that the language is almost an equal mixture of Ijebu, Ijaw, Urhobo, and Edo.

So, it is really laughable when these same shysters, who will not accept fellow Yoruba - the Agoin, Dekpe, Egun - as Yoruba, will want to grab Omarosaonee as a Yoruba because she is now famous and  ignorant of the ethnic relationships of Nigerian ethnicities!

Please, conserve OK Quincy!

Dr Kassim, it is not our place to “accept” or not accept Omarosa’s Yorubaness.
She says she’s Yoruba, so she’s.

Is she from Egbaland? Egba Ile Olumo. Would she like to eat some lafun

Is she from Ondo-"Ondo- Ile omo o ni ila kan"; Ondo ile aje oku adie--would she feel like pounded yam with exotic bush meat in egusi soup?

Is she from Akure--Akure Oyemekun, Ekiti, Owo, Ianre, Ile Oluj axis--where pounded yam is okay for breakfast; lunch and dinner with variety o the most delicious soups in the world?

Is she from Ibadan or Oyo --Oyo mesi axis--Apologies I can't remember Ebenezar Obey's homage to the Ibadan folks. Would she like amala with gbegiri soup?

Is she From Igbomina--land in Kwara?

Steve Kueberuwa:

Despite your episodic absence hereabouts, your glum disposition has not changed!  Haba!  You still are angry at life?

Moving on to the subject at hand...

Yoruba speakers should spend some time viewing these videos;

Greetings Kikin in Itsekiri

No 1 to 20 in Itshekiri

The Itshekiri relationship to the Yoruba language is unmistakeable in these videos.

However, you are absolutely right in one respect:. No Yoruba speaker can understand Itshekiri when spoken fast, fluently and naturallly, because it has certainly picked vocabulary from surrounding influence.  Without any insult meant, it is now a Yoruba Creole language.

Just watch this video, and the Yoruba speaker will agree with me - and with you:

The Story of Jesus in Itshekiri

As to the name Omarosaonee,  you sidestepped any comment on it in your usual  strange manner.  The Yoruba use a lot of Omo to prefix names, whole the Itshekiri use Oma.  But Omarosaoenee is certainly is not a common Itshekiri name if at all,  but it is either a clever invention Oma Rosa (Rosa's child) or a twist on the common name Omasan (Good child).   Here are a lot of Itshekiri Omas;

Unisex:
  • Omademi (Ode/Odemi/Demi) — A child born upon father’s return
  • Omadoye (Odoye) — A child that has become royalty
  • Omaejemite (Majemite) — Do not bring dishonour upon me
  • Omagbemi (Ogbemi) — My child protects me
  • Omaghomi (Ghomi) — My child is going to look after me
  • Omamara — I am used to it
  • Omamofe (Mofe) — It is the child I have been looking for
  • Omasan — Good child
  • Omatsola (Tsola) — This child is life
  • Omatsuli (Tsuli) — The child is what makes a home
  • Omawumi (Owumi/Wumi) — I love children
Male:
  • Omatseye (Tseye) — Child is life

Finally Omarosa Manigault Newman is a Black wan, a human being, an African American whose ancestry is certainly not native American - in fact, who knows?  But she is culturally signified with a Nigerian name, and we should accept her as such.

And there you have it.

Bolaji Aluko

PS:. Mo gb'Itshekiri when spoken slowly....my first language in life was Esan (within an Itshekiri milieu growing up between 1956 and 1959 at Ekpoma) before Yoruba and English.

Olola,

Folks,

Are you all reading this? An ethnic Steve K. Says Itshekiri is not Yoruba, Prof Aluko is equally here forcing the Yoruba ethnic group on Itshekiri. This has been done to the people of Kwara who have said they Are not Yoruba. It was equally flustered on the people of Kogi who have also said they are not Yoruba. What is it about the Yoruba and revanchism? This is unbelievable that I. The 21st century, a people are being forced into a nation that they reject.

Folks are beginning to stretch incredulity beyond reasonability. I sit here today to say that Itshekiri has no absolutely no relationship to the Yoruba. If there is any kind of relationship it would be a place where Oduduwa stopped and asked for direction on his way from the Oba of Benin palace to Ile-Ife on his colonization mission.

Thanks for the video..very enlightening...

The numbers ate not fantastic.  They wertr not necessarily standing armies, in barracks, but people ready for call-up.  And remember that the Yoruba were always very numerate, seemed to like counting, hence fascination with a numbers system.

Brother Dipo,
Could you expatiate on this statement you made: """Steve K is one hell of an angry man. I still believe he is not an Itsekiri proper. He is more Kukuruku/Auchi. No real real Itsekiri is apt to speak ill of Yoruba. Some of them are very active in OPC till today.""""............Unquote Dipo Eniola!

We realize that some of us are very uncomfortable with the natural corollary deductions from their statements or the rational implications and ramifications of their statements. JUI would like to address some of the implications of your statement excerpted above. The statement is very inaccurate and unsupported by the realities in Yoruba-Kukuruku relations. If you dont know, most Afenmai/Kukurukus from Owan or Akoko-Edo areas bear Yoruba names. There are unregistered Associations of Edo/Kukuruku Yorubas in almost every metroplex in Nigeria. In fact, most children of Kukurukus speak Yoruba in Kukuruku homes and land. Most of my Uncles' children comfortably speak Yoruba at Agenebode, rather than the Uvhanno Edo dialect.

The truth is that individuals will exhibit their compositions anywhere you place them; if Stevek has been unfriendly with Yorubas, that's Stevek, not any ethnic group you assign to him because y'll find thousands of people from his ethnic groups who are married to or closely associate with Yorubas. In fact, you may even find an Ekiti man dissociating himself from what an Egba man may be doing. It's usually INDIVIDUAL, not people or places! And that's JUI's POINT!!
 Take care. JUI

Imperial:

Steve Stanley Kueberuwa and Otitigbe Obadiah Alegbe are both Urhobo.   There is serious cultural fluidity between the Itshekiri and the Urhobo in the Sapele/ Warri environs that makes cross-defections between the two possible for political expediency, particular thise with Itshekiri mothers and Urhobo fathers, which are aplenty.

On July 24, 1999, I once brokered peace among the Ijaw, the Urhobo and the Itshekiri in the Diaspora, and even though we could not agree in the agenda at the meeting - we could not agree on whether to include the title  Olu of Warri or Olu of Itshekiri or discuss the issue at all - at  the meeting many on all sides found out all kinds of  family relationships  among themselves, and the acrimony subsided thereafter.

That is a month to the day over exactly 19 years ago now!  Lord have mercy on Nigerians!

In my present post, I merely stated that I am of Itsekiri ancestry and my hometown in Nigeria is in Itsekiri country.

Furthermore, why do you assume that one cannot be both Urhobo and Itsekiri or Yoruba and Fulani?

Or is it that atavistic tribal mentality compels one to think of any Nigeria as belonging to one ethnic group ONLY?

Long time sir . No Yoruba here is trying to claim Omarosa as she didn’t do anything commendable in my humble judgement .

Are you really an Itsekiri or Urhobo man ? ?

Remember about 4 or 5 years ago, I wrote at this forum that our first finance minister, Chief Festus Okotie Eboh was Itsekiri but you immediately challenged me insisting that he was Urhobo. You even scolded him for changing his ethnic group from Urhobo because his wife was Itsekiri.  With the above from you, I immediately assumed you were not Itsekiri but an Urhobo man .

Subject: Response to Afis: Is Omarosa’s Maternal Heritage Nigerian?

Dr Kassim, it is not our place to “accept” or not accept Omarosa’s Yorubaness.
She says she’s Yoruba, so she’s.
Afis
Quote:

"I submit that the most important attribute. that we all share with Omarosa is that she is human regardless of her nationality, race or ethnic group. If instead of being human Omarosa is a Chimpanzee, mankind's closest genetic cousin (with 98% genomic homology-similarity) no one would care whether she is Nigerian or from other nation or her ethnic group"--Ola Kassim excerpt from below.

Unquote

Afis:

I concede!

We should let Omarosa be what she wants to be.
It's her personal business not ours!

Now that we know and accept Omarosa is our Yoruba Sister we need
to find which Yoruba sub-ethnic group she came from:

Is she an original Omo Eko; Omo onile? --from Lagos; Eko ni'le; Eko Ilu-ogbon; Eko for Show
after the Substance--not just for Show.

Is she from Egbaland? Egba Ile Olumo. Would she like to eat some lafun

Is she from Ijebuland?--Ijebu mo oju owo; (Ijebu knows the value of money.)--How eould she take to ikokore and ebiripo

We can keep on trying to subtype Omarosa's lineage down to the street level of where
to find her true origins if we have the time and resources to do so. But what value would this
be to society in general?

I submit that the most important attribute. that we all share with Omarosa is that she is human
regardless of her nationality, race or ethnic group. If instead of being human Omarosa is a Chimpanzee, mankind's closest genetic cousin (with 98% genomic homology-similarity)no one would care whether she is Nigerian or from other nation or her ethnic group.

And Chimpanzees just like all other fauna and floraon planet earth are  children (creations) of the Almighty God too!

Bye,

Ola

Ejongboro:

I have never said that Itshekiris are Yoruba, but that their  kith-and-kinship with the Yoruba, particularly in language and some cultural aspects,  is undeniable.

I previously provided this video of the Story of Jesus narrated in Itshekiri:

The Story of Jesus in Itshekiri

I then indicated that no Yoruba speaker would immediately say that any Yoruba is  being spoken at all  - until you listened slowly and carefully.  Since Steve Kueberuwa says that the Itshekiri language is now practically an equal admixture of Ijebu,  Ijaw, Urhobo and Edo,. I would love any of these  other speakers on this forum to  assist in any way in affirming  Ior differing from Kueberuwa's assertion

Thank you in advance.

Afis

Afis:

Bye,

Ola

Adey,

This is not the usual back and forth between us. What you have written here is very interesting to me.

In my family, members speak both Itsekiri and Uwvie (a dialect of Urhobo, which I speak). So, it is not unusual to see two members conversing, one speaking Uwvie and the other speaking Itsekiri, unconsciously.

Now, a few members of my family, like myself and my siblings, were never taught Itsekiri, because we weren't born there. So, I never understood Itsekiri.

Then I lived in Lagos for several years and learned Yoruba and, because all my friends were Ondo, I understood Ondo fluently. 'Se ofe lu pe, egin"?

Then I went home, fully believing that I can now be functionally understanding of Itsekiri. No, it didn't happen.

In fact, my oldest brother's children, who were born and raised in Yorubaland and spoke nothing but Ilesha Yoruba don't understand Itsekiri.at all.

So, what up with you story? Doing your usual stuff?

That means that the language from which Itsekiri did not evolve from modern day Yoruba but that both modern day Yoruba and Itsekiri evolved from that parent language that that no longer exists. So neither is the subset of the other.

Subject: Re: NigerianID | Re: Response to Afis: Is Omarosa’s Maternal Heritage Nigerian?

Greetings Stevek,

Ehn, it’s early Sunday morning here.....

Check out the following links:

Back in the day, my neighbors could have been speaking “diluted” Itsekiri.
In the 70’s, Lagos had a lot of folks from different parts of Nigeria trying to
reside together. And, as I pointed out, I could understand folks from Ijebu,
Ondo, Ibadan, Ekiti, Ilorin....and, Itsekiri. One of my neighbors, mixture of
Yoruba (father) and Itsekiri (Mother) were family very close friends... Deji,
their eldest, and his sister (Bose) were more like siblings to me. They did
speak mostly Yoruba. However, at times, their mom will speak to them in
Itsekiri. I could pick up her points whenever she wasn’t going too fast.

Ehn, a family friend from Ilorin (Baba Taju) was the same way. I was able
to understand him fairly well... But, I often had to tell me to repeat. Same
goes for my very own folks from Ijebu-Remo. For example, I could never
understand my grandmother (when she spoke to my parents or others in
Ijebu)...However, when she spoke to me (in the same Ijebu), I could pick
up her messages.

Moving on......

Happy Sunday!

Stop this your mischief, will you?  Of course, not  some Itshekiri people  want close affinity with Yoruba; but some do including their traditional ruler who wants close affinity with Yoruba. Steve K's opinion does not matter for he is really not an Ishekiri, he is an Auchi man.  Most Kwara people and some part of Kogi are Yoruba and proud  of their Yoruba heritage.  I recently sent you an article where a Yoruba actor of Kwara state origin said he was proud of his Yoruba heritage..  There is nothing about Yoruba 'revanchism.'

First, you said I was a token clerk in New York City. Now, I am a Sanitary Worker.  None of the two jobs requires a college degree. But each of the two jobs pays six figures salary after about 3 years on the job. Thus, for Dipo who only has only a  High School diploma, not bad. He probably takes home twice as much as you make in a year as a Lab attendant inhaling dangerous fumes.

Response:

Really! “... six figures salary after about 3 years on the job” - that’s nothing in NY. If you are not making $1 million in NY, you are living in a one room apartment like those in Ajegunle or Isale Eko!

Hehehehe! Poor standard of living!

Put another way, someone making $60,000 to $65,000 in City of Dallas lives a SUPERIOR quality of live compared to someone making $100,000 to $150,000 in NY. Or, try this: if you are making low six figures in Texas, you are living “senior-service-lifestyle” - guarded gated community, if you prefer.

Peace out! (You need to go get a degree so you can make at least $500,000 in your city).

Iguade (Don’t understand those in my generation or age group, who came to USA in the 1970s and 1980s with no degree, I don’t fucking get it).

My People:

This is a wonderful day.  Steven Stanley Kueberuwa finally confesses that he is an Uvwie-speaking Urhobo (just as I am, well an Ekiti-speaking Yoruba).  He also documents his foray into Yoruba-speaking Lagos, and that of his family member(s) into Ilesha, where he and others learnt various dialects of Yoruba.. On this same day, Otitigbe Obadiah Oghereore Alegbe wrote uncommonly meekly that

Quote

There are intermarriages between Urhobo-Itshekiri-Ijaw since ages. In fact almost all the Olu of Itshekiri have urhobo blood if not they will not accept it. I even read that teh mother of EK Clark is Urhobo. Becuasde of neigbourhood the Orogun-Urhobo intermaried with Kwales. The idea of Delta State is correct.

This is significant progress.

And there you have it.

Chuks Nwanna,

When Chukwuemeka Okala started with Ikwerre is not Igbo, two members of the Yoruba nation on these board told him to shove it and quit lying. Those two people were Alagba Afis and Dr. Ojo.

I want to be on the right side of the truth and in this case Alagba Afis wrote in the strongest terms that Chukwuemeka Okala was telling lies and distorting the facts. The other person was Dr. Ojo who uses his expertise in philology to render Emeka’s statements are pure fabrications.

Did you post the same thing on IKWERRE-Igbos versus IGBOS when you shamelessly supporting and pushing Nwa Okala to argue that Ikwerres are not Igbos and they don't speak Igbo language? What is the different between what you posted above and what I posted below?
Ikwerre, also spelt as Ikwere, is a language spoken primarily by the Ikwerre people who inhabit Rivers State, Nigeria.

Classification
Most publications classify it as an Igbo dialect. The classification of Ikwerre as an Igbo dialect is a subject of controversy among some in the Ikwerre community due to political reasons. Based on lexicostatistical analysis, Kay Williamson originally asserted that the Ikwerre, Ekpeye, Ogba, Etche and Igbo languages belonged to the same language cluster, but were not dialects.[4] Subsequent studies by both Williamson and Roger Blench concluded that Igbo, Ikwerre, Ogba and their sister languages apart from Ekpeye form a "language cluster" and that they are somewhat mutually intelligible.[5] There are indications that the Ikwerre society was bilingual even in the pre-colonial Nigeria, with people speaking other Igbo dialects and Ikwerre.[6]

Both excerpts are from the same source in Wikepedia.

You are shameless Yorubas like you will eat your words one day.

Baba Wharfy, I did not say Saraki is Yoruba. I just pointed out his mother was Florence Morenike, that all members of his family choose to marry Yoruba. That’s all.

Let’s start with Olusola Saraki, his wife was Florence Morenike from SW.
Abubakar is NOT Hausa name, it is Arabiyyat, just as Afis is not Hausa but same Islamic source, just as Kassim is Arabic word, just as Tajudeen, Jamie, Abdulkadir, AbdulÁzeez and all are NOT Hausa names but Arabic.

Abubakar Olusola Saraki, was or could have been Yoruba or Hausa.
However, one thing was certain......Late Olusola’s mother was Yoruba.
That’s all I’m certain about.
Then I ask myself why his wife is a Deaconess knowing the Olusola Saraki as a “true Fulani”.
So I say, If Olusola Saraki was a true Fulani his wife couldn’t be a practicing Christian. Florence Morenike was a Deaconess in her church. And those who knew them well told me Saraki sometimes went to church with his wife.
I don’t know what he was, but in my learning of the Al Qur’an, a true Muslim won’t allow a wife to be a Christian.
It is only Yoruba who are liberal enough to have a Christian or Muslim wife and let the wife be herself.
That’s all I can say.

Now, Bukola Saraki: his wife is Toyin Saraki.
Baba Wharfy, Toyin is from the Ojora family in lagos.
Bukola did not go to Sokoto to search for wife, like his father he came back “home” to Yorubaland.
I don’t if he’s Yoruba or not, but their actions speak louder than their voiced opinion of themselves.........”Toyin Ojora-Saraki (born 6 September 1964) is a healthcare philanthropist and the Founder-President of Wellbeing Foundation Africa.”

Bukola’s sister Gbemisola Saraki. Her husband was not NwaGworo Dan Sokoto Obi Nwachukwu, she picked a Segun Fowora from SW.

“Full Name: Gbemisola Rukayat Saraki
State of Origin: Kwara State.
Date of Birth: May 3, 1965.
Nationality: Nigerian
Marriage status: Divorced.
Ex-spouse: Segun Fowora”...........Shikena.

That’s all I stated about Saraki family.
In fact, Bukola’s brother is Laolu Saraki.
His children all carry Yoruba names, and are probably married to SW dames and Damsels by now.

Baba Wharfy, Saraki family’s history speaks for itself.

As of Dino Melaye, I don’t know what he is. What’s my business with him? He soeaks Yoruba fluently, some say he’s from where Jemibewon hailed from in Kogi. I have no idea.

About Sunday Awoniyi. His name is Awoniyi.
Should I argue over his heritage?
Awoniyi, Awolowo, Awosanya, all are Fulani.

I watched the Kinki video, I don’t see how Itsekiri is not just another dialect under Yoruba, just as Ekiti, Ondo or Owo. But Stevek is not a spokesperson for Itsekiri. He’s confused, with having Yoruba in-laws, speaking Urhobo to his extended family members when all they know is Itsekiri and Yoruba, that’s a confused man or very drunk.

Something word “Boko”, I heard on the video, now  confirms the Gha linkage to Yoruba.
A guy in my office, may his soul rest in in peace, used to call me his lost relative.
He was from Gha tribe of Ghana.
He was the first that let me know that the Gha were originally from Yorubaland.
Anytime he saw me his usual greeting was “Boko”. I never knew why and what of the matter until I saw this Itsekiri video.

Stevek, I’m not going to insult you this time around, though you deserved it.
I think you are angry that the Indomitable and Irrepressible VC, provided us with evidence of your sub-tribe’s inalienable natural rights of allegiance to the Yoruba.
You’ve no answers to the two videos, therefore you turned to Afis. One you considered the weakest link, abi o.
I’m quiet sure you read mine in haste.
You want to turn it into Roforofo, in a few minutes, we no go know who be who.
Mba, I’m not going to pay you back with insults.

Lemme explain again:
I indicated in my prior post that a Ghanaian guy told me he was from Gha, and to him in his words, we were related.
He told me they the Gha, were originally from Yorubaland in the coastal area.
I further stated in what you read, that he used to greet me every morning starting with the word “Boko”.  I had to play along, the gentleman was older than me.

So Stevek, I don’t speak Gha.
I was just taken aback when I watched the videos and the word “Boko” jumped out at me.
Please read again what I wrote that you responded to.
But don’t rush, read slowly.
If you do not understand it, pls let me know.

Stevek, I can’t fight you over your heritage.
If you noticed I have moved back from piling jokes on you. Why? Because this is very important to you. That’s just me.

It’s not worth unnecessary argument.
I watch videos, saw something familiar to me, I spoke about it. That’s it.
I have explained to you what I found similar with Itsekiri, from what a colleague once told me about his own Gha tribe.
The Gha guy said originally they were Yoruba, you came out to ask Afis if he speaks Gha.
Now you are trying to play on my ego on who knows what.
I don’t fall for pettiness. If you see me pounding you, I’m doing it not out of anger or to boost my ego.......just for fun. So drop it you can’t yank my chain.
Is there any reason for Afis to be well versed in Gha before a man from Gha could tell him Gha was from Yoruba?
I really don’t understand your argument.
Anyways, let’s drop an unnecessary argument.

This is what I know about Itsekiri and Yoruba’s One Love, as of now:

Olu of Warri very recently travelled to Ile Ife to pay homage to the Arole Odua.
Then the Olu travelled to Lagos to bow, I mean, to greet Asiwaju Tinubu.
Then Olu of Warri went to visit Oba of Lagos, then jetted to the Governor Ambode’s office.
Stevek, that’s unity of brotherhood.
Why fight you on Itsekiri is Yoruba or not Yoruba?
Stevek, it is yours.

Not too long ago, we launched the OPC-Itsekiri chapter.
We did not launch OPC in Igboland, but in Itsekiri Nation. Whatever is there must be stronger than what you are defining.
So what are we fighting about, Stevek?
The Itsekiri can’t launch Itsekiri Warriors and hope to have Yoruba to join.
Only Yoruba can launch an organization big enough a tent to shield the Itsekiri in case of Troubles.
Yoruba are their protectors.
So why fight those we protect, our brothers and sisters?
It is called Ajulo.
Stevek, welcome to knowing.

That's how related languages are explained by scientist, not the the illiterate nonsense that you and your "VC" are attempting.

If you insist, then as a Yoruba, translate the following Itsekiri words into English or their Yoruba equivalent:

Itoye, Emajemite, Tagbashewe, Awhinoron, Eghrakpata, Ologhofor, Uduaghan

Or you can ask your "VC" to help you since he is a master Googler and his mother is Itsekiri!

Adey,

Ose aro.

Just because you marginally understand a bunch of Yoruba dialects languages, that include Itsekiri, doesn't make Itsekiri a Yoruba language. It is flawed logic. Otherwise, Yoruba would claim Awuna (Agoin) in Benin Republic and Baule in Cort D'voire as Yoruba. Do you?

Besides, I am Itsekiri who wasn't born to learn the language. But I learned to speak and understand Yoruba, even Ondo. But my personal experience with my own family is that I still cannot understand them when they speak. I just had a speaker phone conversation with two of my elders at home who speak both Urhobo and Itsekiri last Friday and the issue was discussed and even experimented!

But you want to supersede my own ongoing intimate experience with something you recollect [FALSELY] from your childhood?

To be clear, no one is saying that the Itsekiri language has no connection to the Yoruba language. It has. But it has connections to other languages as well, like Urhobo and Ijaw, to even a greater extent.

Therefore, the correct characterization of Itsekiri people is that they are descended from the same source as the Yoruba, not descended from the Yoruba or even downright Yoruba, as you claim. They also have significant common descent from the Ijaw and Itsekiri, among other N'Delta peoples.

And the Yoruba connection, from what I learned from my elders last Friday, is not Ijebu but Ilaje!

Let me ask you a question, why do you want the Itsekiri to be Ijebu so bad? You don't even like me!

Stevek.

Afis,

You are being terribly presumptuous here.

You cannot teach what you haven't learned and you can't tell a person their own experience that you didn't live.

I am sure that you are not Itsekiri nor do you have Itsekiri parent that imparted this "valuable lessons" to you.

I am also sure that you have never spent 1 minute in an Antropology class to learn how human languages evolve.

I have, on both counts.

Languages do not arise from one another; the related languages arise from a common progenitor language that no longer exist.

Thus, while Itekiri and Yoruba are unquestionably, related - as Itsekiri is also equally related to Urhobo and Ijaw - both Itsekiri and Yoruba evolved from a common progenitor, and not a sublanguage of Yoruba.

Mutual respect by the different peoples of Nigeria will do more for the its peoples than this ignorant "your tribe came from my tribe" and "my tribe is better than yours" thing.

Stevek:
Your points well taken, as I previously stated, if one isn’t Igbo there is no cogent points in insisting that another person is what he chooses not to be.
However, Stevek, you are missing some valuable lessons that your “elders” failed to teach you per your discussions with them.
You are an educated guy, you should realize that most large tribes all over the world have variation of their languages.
Like in China, everyone speaks and understands Mandarin, but their are various sides to chinese language and even their writing and alphabetic styles are region to region slightly different, such as the Pinyin style that is more mandarin, or the Wu style that is used in the Shanghai axis.
Majority of Itsekiri claim Yoruba.
I think you’re half Itsekiri and half Urhobo, and your Urhobo is arguing against your Itsekiri’s belief.

My point: Since your elders may be more backward than you, and they may not be aware that variants don’t mean non-belonging, don’t you think your elders may be wrong about Itsekiri not Yoruba?
Don’t you think you as an enlightened man should be teaching your elders about how the world rotates, at your old age?

I am not arguing, just helping you to reach the mountain top!
