The Oke-Oluokun, Ibadan, home of late Chief Adegoke Adelabu is to be officially enlisted as one of the tourist sites in Oyo State.

This was revealed at the weekend during the memorial programme tagged “58 years after 1958”and public presentation of the newly rehabilitated home in honour of the late minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Speaking through the State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun, Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi explained that this is in recognition, remembrance and celebration of the eloquent and flowery politician’s enviable academic records, exceptional writing skills, oratorical prowess and contributions to the Nigerian political landscape especially as the pioneer of grassroots politics in the then Western Nigeria during his short lifetime.

The spokesperson of the Oyo State government commended the consistent efforts of the Adegoke Adelabu Foundation at immortalizing the academic and political hero emphasizing the need to ensure that our heroes past did not labour in vain.

He therefore pledged government’s commitment to promoting the site as a tourist centre by listing it officially as a site to visit in Oyo State.According to him, “The Oyo State Government is sufficiently enthused with the development at late Chief Adegoke Adelabu’s Taj Mahal. It is our desire to partner with the family in promoting this historical monument. Our first step is to place it on the official list of tourist sites in the state as a mark of honour, respect and in remembrance of the late hero of the masses.”

Adegoke Adelabu’s home located in the heart of the ancient city of Ibadan popularly known as the Taj Mahal has undergone extensive rehabilitation and positioned as a monument containing his grave, library, literary works, office, personal effects, photographs and other historical items.

The guy is not "explaining" what the govt is doing to the people.

All Lai Mohammed is doing since inception is to play Naija's "Baghdad Bob", which makes him look silly and unbelievable.
Unless all info attributed to him in the press were not from him, he hasn't been impressive at all.

What are the ministers doing? We don't know details, nothing nada.

All we hear is PDP stole Trillions of Naira.

That is not info, that's rerun of news!

What steps are the govt of Buhari taking right now to channel those stolen funds back into the economy?  We don't know. Poor people are just being told to be patient.

Alhaji Mohammed engaging in propaganda cannot impress a people who need food on their tables.  He's behaving like the ex-PDP Reuben Abati. That's not change.

I am sure Buhari and his govt are working hard, but Lai Mohammed is not doing them justice, he turned himself into the "defender-in-chief", instead of the "Explainer-in-chief".

That ain't good.

I AM ASHAMED OF THE GOVERNOR AND THE COMMISIONER.
ADELABU FOUNDATION  KNOWS THAT ADELABU WAS NOT AN OBA BUT A POLITICIAN .THEREFORE A YORUBA APELLATION LIKE "OLUDE PENKELMESI" OF WHICH IS ADELABU WAS KNOWN IS GOOD ENOUGH.iw

Taj Mahal!

Taj Ma - what???

Are we simply a bunch of illiterates in a nation packed full of people who have been to school more than citizens of most nations of the world???! Do we have any premonition for the simple art (not science) of KNOWING? We are logic-challenged - straight up and true? Did anyone ever ask questions as simple as, "What does the phrase 'Taj Mahal' mean?" "Where does it come from?" "What is the historical significance of Taj Mahal or the root cause of it, in the first instance?"

Taj Mahal kè?

Are we talking about the resting place of the same Adelabu "Penkelemeesi," the extraordinary interlocutor, the Number One Opposition Leader, popularly known to friends and foes as "Olori Alatako?"

Why on earth would a Taj Mahal elevate the glory of this great man, Adelabu, among the giants of a great city from a great ethnicity within a great nation? Would anyone not see this as a demotion?

I have an answer, call it exasperating speculation: Our base is weak! This is the aphorism of the man with the crooked top, as the Yoruba would say; you only need to look at the foundation. Has anyone visited Abuja of late? Please if and when you do, go to the best residential areas and tell me the names of those streets on the beautiful hills; they are names like California Road, Mississippi Close, Missouri Street, Indiana Path, and the list goes on and on, all named after American states, rivers, and other landmarks. "Lord have mercy!" was all I could mutter to myself when I saw this aberration a few months ago.

Not done. I even visited a state house, where the governor of a great historical state lived, and the building’s official name is “The White House.” All I could do was scream my lungs out. There are a thousand and one towns and cities, not counting legendary villages, hamlets and other historical monuments all across Nigeria. There are sites of historical warfare in Yorubaland, Hausaland, Igboland, Edoland, Tshekiriland and a gazillion more and there are countless names of rivers all around Nigeria. Why on earth can we not name our streets (in Abuja, a national capital that we created in 1976 or thereabout) after those?

Whoever came up with the name "Taj Mahal" for the Adelabu historical site could have just picked up a cell phone, called the likes of Professor Akinwumi Isola or any of the legendary repositories of culture who are still living and ask for suggestions. Don't we have the likes of Toyin Falola, a celebrated intellectual juggernaut who has written every conceivable book on every conceivable subject in the humanities and could suggest an appropriate name? Rather than spend valuable time contesting and contending the name given to a dog, fellow Nigerians, why not spend quality time to think of a name to be given the mausoleum of a Yoruba icon? Can't we do better?

My goodness! You could have referred to it as "Qabr Rajul Eazim" (Tomb of A Great Man) and we will have something to debate about the inappropriateness of an Arabic phrase on the tomb of a Yoruba Great. You may proffer a counter argument that he was a Muslim who studied Arabic. We will still reject the argument and shoot out ten thousand phrases in Yoruba that would dwarf the Arabic phrase. But to say Taj Mahal, there is nothing there to debate.

A Taj Mahal for an Adelabu Tomb is a desecration of the sacred, an abomination of desolation. Nothing more, nothing less, and nothing else!

It beats my imagination.

I am curious. Really, I am . . .

Taj Mahal! that rings a bell. I was conducting an interview as part of a research to determine how African folkdances could be used in schools to enhance performance and prevent dropout among Africans... a Nigerian parent, a reverend at that, told me his child could not participate in the research because he was a Christian. I felt so sorry for the man. in the end, it was west indian parents who came to my rescue. ever wonder why pan-Africanism, negritude and now afrocentricity have all been championed by diaspora blacks! ever asked yourself why fanon, walter Rodney, George padmore, molefi asante, blyden are all diaspora blacks! Africans should be very ashamed of themselves!

In my humble opinion, the house ought to be named "Penkelemesi" - a fitting memorial to his single minded doggedness as a political strongman of Ibadan, in his era.

In addition a giant statue should be constructed with a legislative memorial plaque that will be forever be a source of education for the young and a fitting immortalization for the elderly - cutting across generations. For his people, he was Cicero and Demosthenes Nato combined.

History is a powerful vehicle, if used intelligently and honestly. The term 'Taj Mahal' is out of place, even ridiculous.

Just consider the far fetched likelihood of an imposing building in modern India being named "Adelabu House'!

We must cure ourselves of our deep seated neo colonial inferiority complex.

My two cents

"History is a powerful vehicle, if used intelligently and honestly. "

True, but first there has to be intelligence, which this name they gave does not indicate.
And then honesty?!!?? Sounds like a tongue-in-cheek statement.
That's asking for waaaaay too much from these demon parasites.

Seriously, they can choose any name they want, they can even call Adegoke's house Jafojo, really what's in a name?
Just for not agreeing with the name doesn't give the Ibadan people the right to be so angry and turn into a Mob, head to the place to vandalize the house named Taj Mahal, and the police coming to "rescue" the name givers and to save their lives charge them to court for "breaching a peace".
In your view, sir, who should be arrested?
The angry mob or the person who named the Adegoke's house?
The point you omitted is, NO ONE DESERVED TO BE KILLED FOR NAMING THE HOUSE "TAJ MAHAL".......On that point alone, yep, any name is a name and deserves to be a rightful expression that must not be disturbed either by a rogue Police or a Fanatical and Homicidal Fulani Mob.
However, like we are doing now, people who opposed such name can debate on it, they can go to civil court to put a stop to it, they can hold peaceful demonstration to protest and be heard.
That's the difference between An Animal Kingdom-Nigeriana and Ilu Oyinbo-USA......Abi na Ilu Inago of Black and scary Brown people sef, a la Michele Bachman?
