'In my later years at King’s College I developed a fascination for Ikoyi and Lagos Island and I spent a few of my holidays at the home of my uncle Dr. Adigun on Saka Jojo Street, Victoria Island.  It is from there I would link up with ’Bayo Oyesanya and other school mates.  It was here that we heard about a senior ranking officer in the Army, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.  We had heard of the myth built around his foiling of the Dimka coup, his identification with the left and his radical tendencies.  However, this never seemed to marry with the array of cars that littered his compound at the time.  He seemed to be very wealthy and I could not square this up with the image I cultivated of a clean living army officer.'

The Dr. Adigun you referred to as your uncle here, was he the actuary associated in the mid 60s with the African Alliance Insurance Company on Broad Street almost opposite the African Church Cathedral?

Oh yes, I knew him. He had come to the Mathematics Department at UI to interest us in actuarial science career. That was early in 1967. One of us, Ajibola Ogunshola left for the UK later that year to study for the professional exams of the Institute of Actuaries. He was soon to become the first black African Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries. I interacted with twice or so thereafter while I was teaching at KC. It is a small world. My memory says he hailed from somewhere near Iwo, perhaps Oluponna.

You are so spot on! My uncle became a fellow too shortly after Mr Ogunsola...He still lives an active life even at 82! Yes we come from Oluponna, more about him is in my book 'I found my voice', I hope sir you may obtain a copy....

I wouldn't vuvuzela the entrance of one into a third rate organization such as Institute of Actuary. I have read that really smart people aim for the more rigorous Society of Actuary or the International Actuarial Association.

And that was in spite of the fact that Dr. Reichel who came to us with Dr. Adigun was in fact an American. Riechel worked with the Nogerian FG Ministry of Trade and Indistries as an actuary but was not promoting the SOA. It may well have had a lot to do with the fact that the insurance industry in Nigeria was then severely British in orientation.

2.) No one has ever told me till now that the Society is superior to the Institute. Au contraire, each recognizes the others' examinations as equivalent in the areas of overlap. The major difference is that Americans bifurcate actuarial studies into the tracks LIFE and CASUALTY and the British prepare an actuary for both areas.

3.) Over the past 39 years, I have been preparing Howard University students for the career in actuarial science. Many of my non-American students have found the programs of the Institute more relevant to the practices in their home countries and, accordingly, opted for the exams of the Institute. Today, when I am invited to the meetings of the IABA, I get 
to see my former students, some FSA, some FIA, but all sharing professional
contentment ---- and gratitude toward their sometime teacher.

 Insurance Actuary.
Actuaries make mathematical calculations involving probability of future payments on insurance against losses arising from various causes. They determine the methods for maintaining the financial stability of insurance companies.
    The actuary profession originated in England with the organizations of insurance societies, later spreading to other countries. The first actuaries worked primarily with statistical calculations needed in the rapidly growing field. Today, they have taken on problems of investment, selection of risks, compensation for agents, taxation, and development of policy forms.
   With more than 3,000 actuaries working in many different departments of many different kinds of insurance companies in the United States, it would be surprising indeed, to find all of them with same aptitudes. Ideaphoria would be of use to those who are designing new types of policies . I am certain that Dr Adigun was a pioneer in the study of Actuarial Science but that he also qualified professionally at some stage. He still has an actuarial practice.

Prof Adeboye, 

The U.K. Institute is by far more popular and more respected here in Nigeria than the relatively known 
Society of Actuaries. Up till about 20 years ago, the English institute had fewer than 8members in 
Nigeria. I know Dr Adigun who once served as the chairman of NICON Insurance, when his friend 
late Oladele Olashore was Finance minister but doubt if he was/is a qualified actuarist like your school 
friend & former chairman of the Punch newspaper, Mr Ajibola Ogunsola. 
With the setting up of the local institute in Nigeria, I won't be surprised hearing that we now have over 
150 qualified practitioners .

Dr. Ojedokun,

With a doctorate in actuarial science from Italy, Dr. Adigun became the first
Nigerian actuary, period. For him, adding the FIA to his qualification was adding
icing to cake.
