Hello all,

Most of my modelling experience has been with Visum, which has the ability to model turn restrictions. Is there a way to do this in AqeuilibraE, or plans to bring this feature to the software?

Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric,
That is a very good question, and the simple answer is "not yet" .  The reason for that is twofold:

- Shortest path with turn penalties (or bans) needs to be solved with a vine-based algorithm, and AequilibraE has only a node-based one (curious minds can go here for a simple explanation: http://tfresource.org/Vine_building)

- AequilibraE still does not have a data model that supports turn bans/penalties.

Right now we are in the middle of building the data model functionality, which will be coupled with a network editing tool (https://github.com/AequilibraE/TranspoNet), and more advanced traffic assignment algorithms will come after that.

I do not anticipate this coming to life in the next year or so, unless somebody wants to invest in the development of these capabilities (e.g. some public agency wanting to leave commercial packages behind).

Cheers,
Pedro

Hello Pedro,

Sorry for the delay in responding. Your response got me thinking about Turn Restrictions in OpenStreetMap (OSM) data so I started digging and then forgot to respond. From the bit of digging that I did, it seems as though the turn restrictions can be downloaded, but I wasn't able to do it myself. Does it make sense to use the same data model as OSM to retain compatibility with the larger data source?

I'm glad to hear it's being worked on; if there's a way to contribute then I will, but I think I need to learn some programming first.

Eric

Hi Eric,

Thanks for taking so long to respond to this message. I have been really swamped.  The problem with turn restrictions in AequilibraE right now is not the data model to include them, but the shortest path algorithm itself, which is just a standard node based algorithm, instead of a vine-based one.

That is something that I plan to address in the near future, however.

Cheers,
Pedro
