On May 11, 1936 Kathy was born in Rushville, Indiana and parents were Euleta Wainscott Pickett and Herschel Pickett now deceased. Siblings were Jack (deceased) (Pat - deceased), Orpha (deceased) Robert (deceased)-(Wanda) and John Pickett (Sandy) of Indianapolis.
She was graduated from Rushville High School in 1954 and received a BS degree in 1958 and an MA in 1967 from Ball State Teacher's College. She was active in Delta Zeta Sorority, Delta Phi Delta Art Honorary, as an Art Editor of the Orient and selected as an Outstanding Senior and for Who’s Who Among Students in Colleges and Universities.
She was married to Donald R. Simmons in 1958 and children Stephen Todd (Cynthia), and Gregory Alan survive. Son Brian Jay preceded her in death in 2022. The family lived in Anderson, Muncie, Marion and settled in Lafayette. Kathy taught elementary art in Anderson then stayed home with their children and was active as a den mother and school volunteer while teaching Jr. High Art part time in Lafayette Catholic Schools. She then taught full time in West Lafayette Community Schools for 22 years. Upon retirement Kathy became a Supervisor of Student Teachers of Art for Purdue University for 12 years.
In 1993 she was married to Dr. David Joseph Trout (deceased) and became a step mother to Dr. Robert Joseph Trout (Sharon), Caroline Jean Trout Johnson (Steve), and Michael Andrew Trout (Kellie). Soon they became Grandparents to Ashley, Joel, Connor and Reva Simmons and Katherine and Jacqueline Johnson, Scott, Abney, and Ellie Trout. Grandchildren events were enjoyed at sporting, performance, dancing, school activities and many Grandparent Days. Visits with Grandchildren usually included art making sessions.
As a teacher Kathy often exhibited student work in school and in many competitions where there were winners. Teaching art was a passion and her teaching had to include problem solving, critical thinking skills and self expression. Kathy became active in Art Education Association of Indiana (Pres.), Japan Cultural Exchange, NAEA National Convention delegate and many State Committees, among them the 21st Century Advisory Council for the State Board of Education.
Kathy relished life in Lafayette and became involved in many groups who work to sustain the quality of life here:
Delta Zeta House Corporation Board, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Kappa Kappa, New Artists high school art exhibit creator, YWCA Board, TAF Board, Duncan Community Hall Board, Art Museum of Greater Lafayette Board,19 years, co-creator of children’s game, Art Trek, for Lafayesta. Chairman of Education Committee, Art Smart Indiana up-date with Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Paint the Town-children’s window painting activity-chair, and Art League.
Kathy was honored but reticent for any recognition for doing what she loved to do; she received Indiana Elementary Art Educator of the Year-1987, Golden Apple-1991 from Chamber of Commerce,
Crystal Apple from Purdue University School of Education-2000, Louis Weil Volunteer Award from Art Museum of Greater Lafayette-2000, Sagamore of the Wabash-2001 from Governor Frank O'Bannon, YWCA Salute to Women, Woman of Distinction-2006,Distinguished Fellow of AEAI-2006 Suzanne Stafford Award 2013 and Art League Exemplary Service Award-2017.
Being with family and friends, teaching in the wonderful West Lafayette Schools, the ARTS, museums, reading, travel (all states and Canadian Provinces in an RV with her beloved husband, David), architecture, decorating, gardening and making art were her favorite things on earth.
Despite her numerous activities and accolades as an educator and community volunteer, Kathy’s true legacy lies in her roles as a devoted mother and grandmother, a steadfast friend and as a mentor to people from all walks of life. Her kindness and wisdom nurtured and inspired all who were fortunate enough to know her – she was a true teacher in all aspects of life, not just the classroom.
Kathy passed in her home on October 1st. A celebration of her life will be held at Tippecanoe Funeral Chapel, 3631 Morehouse Road, West Lafayette, Indiana, on October 18th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
