Hi guys,

about 1 hour ago, I've started to get this error when editing campaign locations via API. 

My campaigns are certainly not targeting EU, nor my API code has changed. 

I believe this is an issue in the G Ads API.

Thank you for contacting the Google Ads API support team.

As previously announced, Google will discontinue serving political advertising in the European Union in anticipation of new regulations effective October 2025. On September 3, 2025, the Google Ads API and Google Ads scripts implemented related enforcements. Users using these products for campaign creation or management may need to update their applications to accommodate these changes before September 3, 2025.

The Google Ads API and Google Ads scripts now support self-declaration for campaigns containing EU political ads. A definition of an EU political ad is available here. API versions v19.2, v20.1, and v21 include a new field, contains_eu_political_advertising, within the Campaign object. Possible values and their meanings are mentioned in the blog post.

I hope it helps. If still getting the same errors, to investigate the issue further, kindly provide us with the complete API logs (request and response with request-id and request header) generated at your end when editing campaign locations via API.

If you are using a client library and haven't enabled the logging yet, I would request you to enable logging for the specific client library that you are using. You can refer to the guides for Java, .Net, PHP, Python, Ruby, or Perl to enable logging at your end. For REST interface requests, you can enable logging via the curl command by using the -i flag.

Yea, I was able to find out myself since I was getting a little desperate.

I wonder tho - why do you need to declare this for campaigns that are not targeting any EU countries...

Hi,

As previously stated, it is required that you self-declare if this campaign includes political advertising content intended for the European Union.

However, you mentioned that for your campaigns that are not targeting any EU countries. So you should use the DOES_NOT_CONTAIN_EU_POLITICAL_ADVERTISING field in the contains_eu_political_advertising parameter when creating the campaign to indicate the campaign does not contain political advertising targeted towards the EU. No additional serving restrictions will apply.

We are also getting this error (started on 9/9/2025) on campaign creation on version V19.0.

Hi,

Thank you for reaching out to the Google Ads API support team.

On September 3, 2025, the Google Ads API rolled out enforcements related to changes for supporting European Union Political Ads Regulation. The enforcement includes the following check while creating the campaigns using versions v19 and v20 of the API. 

• All new campaigns created through Google Ads API should set the 'contains_eu_political_advertising' field. The API call to create a new campaign using CampaignService.MutateCampaigns will fail with a FieldError.REQUIRED error if this field is not set.

If you use the Ads API to create or manage campaigns, you may need to update your application to handle these enforcements. Versions v19.2, v20.1, and v21 of the API already have a new field named 'contains_eu_political_advertising' in the Campaign object during their release on August 6, 2025. I recommend you refer to this blog post for information regarding other enforcements related to this change.
