DID PAYING FOR DISPLAY ON GOOGLE ACTUALLY DRIVE MY ORGANIC RANKING DOWN??

So i had one of the newspapers come in who are going into SEO big time.  They advised me that google display is the way to go.  So in first month i get almost 2 million hits to my website which they told me would push me up the organic ranking ( i was already near the top!) however i dropped big time down the ranking because apparently people only went onto the website for a few seconds and came back off which apparently made google think that it was a weak message (or something like that)

So is that right? pay google more money and they slaughter you ??????

Any advice appreciated as i would like to know where i went wrong
