Unrequested/unpredictable behavior of default(?) conversion trackers

We've noticed that on a lot of our accounts -- but not all -- we're having conversion trackers automatically added to them without any action on our part. This is for click to call ads -- they're getting added with the name "Calls from ads" and with a configuration that's not really conducive to our needs.

Our SEM manager insists they're created by default even though they don't appear in all accounts. Someone else on our SEM team thinks they get created only when the account gets its first conversion.

(Also, the in the trackers we've added through the AdWords API the category has been somehow changed to "Phone call lead" even though we could only add them as "Lead" since we're using AdWords. We certainly don't mind the upgrade, but this is another thing we didn't initiate, so we're somewhat perplexed.)

Can someone from Google shed some light on these behaviors? This is putting some of our development on hold.

Our team is unfamiliar with automatic / default conversion trackers. In the API's perspective, creation of conversion trackers would need to be triggered by customers or by the system implemented by them.

That being said, so our team can have a closer look, could you share your customer ID and the Google Ads UI screenshot where the said automatic / default conversion trackers are visible?

Hi Matt, thanks so much for contacting me. In the meantime I actually found my answer – it’s a function of Google Ads itself. A conversion tracker for phone calls is added by default upon the account’s first conversion. The fact that it’s added on first conversion instead of on account creation isn’t stated explicitly, but that’s what we’ve concluded from the behavior we’ve seen.
