Hello,

How should we go about importing click conversions when both clicks ids (gclid for instance) AND user identifiers are available?

The documentation states : "Don't set [user_identifiers] when uploading conversions using only click IDs. If this field is set, Google Ads treats the upload operation as an upload for enhanced conversions for leads."

However, I tried doing it anyway and the API doesn't throw any partial error in the response (or any error at all). Does this mean both gclid and user identifiers will be processed and used for matching by Google?

If that's not the case, does it mean we should make 2 separate "uploadClickConversions" calls for one given conversion if we have both gclid & user identifiers?

Best;

Hi,

Thank you for reaching out to the Google Ads API support team.

According to the Google Ads API documentation, if you have provided user_identifiers along with the GCLID, the conversions imported will be considered as enhanced conversions for leads. If you want to import the conversion as offline click conversion, then I would recommend that you do not submit the user_identifiers while uploading the click conversions. But I would recommend that you upload the conversion as the enhanced conversion for leads as it enables you to improve the accuracy of your offline conversion measurement by uploading click conversions that contain hashed user identifiers. Please refer to this guide for more information on Enhanced conversions for leads.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer. I see in the guide that it is recommended to upload gclid along with user identifiers for more accurate measurement. So using EECL + gclid seems to be the optimal way of importing offline conversions.

Thanks,

Hi,

Thank you for getting back to us.

Yes, you're right. According to this documentation if you have the gclid for a conversion, we recommend sending it in addition to the user_identifiers for improved performance.

If you have any further queries/concerns you can get back to us.

You suggested that we use enhanced conversions for leads when capturing the GCLID instead of uploading a click conversion.

However enhanced conversion for leads requires that that conversion was first already sent on the website as a conversion tracking.

So consider this scenario
If you are unable to implement that on the website and only have the gclid,
you also have the email address later on,
you don't want to rely on that initial conversion

1) It would be impossible to use enhanced conversions for leads in this scenario is that correct? Since you need to have the initial conversion recorded
2) Would it in this scenario be best to use gclid upload without using enhanced conversions?

Hi,

Please find the below responses for your queries:

1) It would be impossible to use enhanced conversions for leads in this scenario is that correct? Since you need to have the initial conversion recorded.
  • I would like to inform you that your understanding is correct that Enhanced Conversions for Leads (ECL) requires an initial conversion event to be fired on the website to function effectively. In your scenario where you lack this initial conversion and only have the GCLID and email address later on, ECL is not feasible.
2) Would it in this scenario be best to use gclid upload without using enhanced conversions?
  • Please note that uploading the GCLID without using Enhanced Conversions will allow you to attribute offline conversions to their respective ad clicks based on the GCLID.
I hope this helps! Kindly get back to us in case of any further queries.
