Do you need to link thrid party accounts to your MCC in order to fetch the details via API

HI All,

We are building a reporting application where people can authorise their adwords accounts via OAuth.

We are confused as to what happens after we get the access token and the refresh token. Do we need to send a mutate call to link their adword account to our MCC and then make the subsequent calls to fetch the data.

This confusion is because the other adwords reporting tools i have used don't show up as my adwords manager in Account Preferences. So how do they fetch my account data ?
