cURL error 60: SSL certificate problem: self signed certificate

Since a few days the PHP client library reports the following error:

GuzzleHttp\Exception\RequestException: cURL error 60: SSL certificate problem: self signed certificate (see https://curl.haxx.se/libcurl/c/libcurl-errors.html) for https://googleads.googleapis.com/v14/customers/<customerid>/googleAds:search in /var/www/<url>/public_html/vendor/guzzlehttp/guzzle/src/Handler/CurlFactory.php:211

It is an intermittent error and I'm wondering what's going on serverside at googleads.googleapis.com...
