Without setting up Google Tags, offline conversions using GCLID can be effectively reported through file import option alone. In case of enhanced conversions, instead of GCLID, an email address or any additional first-party data is required for reporting so that Google can match it to logged-in user Google accounts and report conversion. Why, therefore, is it not possible to report enhanced conversion using the file import option alone without first setting up a Google Tag to collect email addresses from the website since both type of reporting are identical with just swapping of first-party data in place of GCLID?

Hi,

Thank you for reaching out to the Google Ads API support team.

Kindly note that while both GCLID and email address-based enhanced conversions involve matching user data to Google accounts, the Google Tag provides several benefits that enhance the accuracy, flexibility, and efficiency of reporting enhanced conversions using the file import option. It helps protect user privacy, improves matching accuracy, enables additional data collection, facilitates cross-device tracking, automates processes, and ensures compliance with Google Ads policies. I would recommend you kindly refer to this help center article "About enhanced conversions" for more information.

The distinction lies in the data collection method and the way Google matches and reports conversions. For offline conversions without Google Tags, using GCLID through file import works well. However, for enhanced conversions, a different set of data like email addresses or other first-party information is required for reporting. Google needs this data to match it with logged-in user accounts. While both types of reporting involve data swapping, the method of collecting and matching data for enhanced conversions demands specific first-party information like email addresses which the file import option doesn't inherently capture. That's why setting up Google Tags to gather this additional data becomes essential for enhanced conversion reporting.

I hope this helps. Kindly get back to us if you have any further questions related to the Google Ads API.

Can I import enhanced conversions with file import or from Hubspot directly without installing Google Tag on my site? I mean, instead of Google Tag capturing email addresses at the time of conversion, can I use my CRM solution like Hubspot to capture email addresses and send that data back to Google Sheets to import them back as an offline enhanced conversion?

Hi,

Thank you for getting back to us.

Kindly note that importing enhanced conversions without installing a Google Tag directly from a CRM like HubSpot is possible. Instead of relying on Google Tag to capture email addresses during conversion, you can use HubSpot or a similar CRM to gather this data. Subsequently, you can export this information to Google Sheets and import it back as offline enhanced conversions. This process allows for the utilization of CRM data in reporting conversions without the necessity of installing Google Tag on your website. I would recommend you kindly refer to this help center article “HubSpot: Set up your Google tag” for more information.
