I recently looked at NGC 6326, planetary nebula in Ara, with my 12-inch telescope. I didn't see much at 203× which is the power I was using. All I noted was that it was continuously visible to direct vision at 122× and that I could clearly see it as a non-stellar disk. No details.

Coming back home and looking at its image, I really wish I could see it the way it actually looks like. So I'm curious if any of you who have observed from the southern hemisphere with large telescopes had a much nicer view!

Regards
Akarsh

I partially answered my question with Gottlieb’s wonderful notes:

Joseph Turner sketched the planetary on 16 Aug 1874 using the 48" Great Melbourne Telescope. His sketch (unpublished plate VII, figure 74) shows the two nearby stars and no additional features though he noted a softness at the edges and a slight "curdling" appearance.

Well, if it didn’t show much in a 48”… but still curious to hear your experiences.

Incidentally the historic note just above it caught my eye, because like John Herschel II, I too, was observing this object from near Bangalore, India.

Honestly, the few details this one presents in images (https://www.researchgate.net/figure/GMOS-images-of-NGC-6326-in-N-II-HaC-O-III-OIII-O-III-continuum-OIIIC-and-H_fig1_51893770) look to be difficult to make out in . But it was already on my list to observe at TSP with my 16-inch, so I'll be sure to give it some magnification for you!

Interestingly I have no observing logs of this planetary nebula. I seem to remember to have searched for it but the GoTo of my 20" dob had issues and I wasn't able to find it.

Clear skies, Wouter

Hi Akarsh,

if you are still curious - there are still some people left in the world, who are sketching objects to illustrate what is visible with the given aperture and sky conditions. No need for difficult predictable historically observations (the 48" speculum particularly) or photographs.

I can contribute an observation with 24-inch at 649x here http://www.deepsky-visuell.de/Zeichnungen/NGC6326.htm

And found another result of Oliver Stein with 24-inch at 670x here http://www.estelar.de/#NGC%206326

clear spring skies to you all, Uwe
