Namaskar dear members:

The List used to provide an annual report every year during the month of June.  After the list moved to Google Groups, we have not been doing the same.  This year is special because Advaitin List has completed 25 years of service to the humanity through its scholarly postings.

Here is a brief account of the List from its humble beginning.

Advaitin Mailing List (25 Years of Service to the Vedanta Community!)

Histry of this Advaitin Mailing List:

The advaitins List started during June 1998 and was hosted at Coolist.com (no more exists). The focus of this list from the beginning on Sankara’s Advaita Vedanta. This Cyber Satsangh started with about a dozen founding members and few of them are no more with us.   The major objective from the beginning was to provide an open forum to accommodate the world scholars with a diversity of opinions.  The members and moderators have demonstrated the unity within the diversity of opinions. On 31st of August, the list moved to Egroups.com which later merged with the yahoo groups.  The Yahoo Groups closed hosting of all mail lists during the year 2020 and Advaitin List officially got installed under Google Groups during August 2020.

Currently we have 1824 members and the list archive contains articles on almost all aspects of advaita philosophy.  The success of this list can only be measured by how it serves its members or vice-versa, how the members contribute to the list. The list is truly blessed with scholars with both Vivekam (wisdom) and Vinayam (humility) with good communication skills.

The list always looks for ideas and comments to improve its service to the humanity and please feel free to send your comments to any one of the List Moderators or at the List. Your comments will be read by all moderators and they try their level best to make appropriate changes and corrections.

Thank you for your continued participation and support

With warm regards,

Advaitin List Moderat

Namaste Ram ji,

It is indeed heartening to note that we are in the 25th year of this List.  A forum of this stature has indeed helped innumerable aspirants in their quest for the Truth.  That so many topics related to Advaita have been discussed over the years is pleasant to note.

Wishing the List many more years of vibrant service,

subbu

Namaskars Ram Chandran ji,
Congratulations for the dedicated work in the cause of Vedanta. I am sorry that I am not playing any role as a moderator because of my multifarious activities. It may be proper to exclude me from that list. I will happily continue as a member and participate occasionally.
Regards,
Aravinda Rao

Dear Aravinda Raoji,

Congratulations to you. The Advaitin group is a great group with 1824 members and 9 moderators and a history of 25 years of service. Your being selected as an honourable moderator of this group is a great recognition of your high scholarship  and along with that there is also the  privilege that your write-ups are published without subjecting it to any scrutiny. You may kindly reconsider  the continuation of moderatorship. Please don't underestimate the honour that goes with this position, which is not for any Tom,Dick and Harry.

Regards,
Sunil K. Bhttacharjya

Namaskars, Ram Chandran ji and Sunil ji,
Thank you for your affection. I am continuing to be in the position given to me, but I will try to do some justice in future. I just completed writing a book on the challenges faced by Indic religions for their survival. It shows that I am not fully a Vedanti in traditional sense.

Dear Aravunda Raoji,

Thank you for your good decision. Though I have a science background by learning and by profession, I have developed a post-retirement- interest in Advaita philosophy. Of course, there are several other ex-scientists like Sadanandaji, who are good advaitins. However, my another current  interest is in Itihaasa, which is one of compulsory pancha-lakshanas of the fifth veda, and this takes quite a good amount of my time.

In fact, quite sometime ago,  Subbuji sent some posts/messages  on the dating of Adi Shankara in the Advaitin group and some time back, Sadanandaji also sent one post on the dating of the Mahabharata war. After that there is not much interest in Itihasa in the Advaitin group. About two or three  years ago, there was an announcement by the moderator of the BVP (Bharatiya Vidvat Parishad group), in the BVP about the formation of a nine-member team for dating of the Mahabharata war, but that team also failed  to find the date of the Mahabharata war, uptil now. Their total silence seems to indicate that  they have abandoned the project

Many people have difficulty in understanding the pre-paninian Sanskrit and that is also one of the causes of the failures in finding the date of the Mahabharata war. For example, a number of scholars have not been able to differentiate the meanings of (i) prAptam, (ii) prAptam viddhi (particularly in connection with Duryodhana, as an amsha of Kali, but born before the actual arrival of the Kali Yuga),  ((iii) samanuprAptam and (iv) samprAptam., and because of that they could not  arrive at the correct date of the Mahabharata war.  Secondly, most of the researchers lack good knowledge of Indian Jyotisha ((which includes both Astrology and Astronomy), because of which they could not find the actual location of the planets in the zodiac at the time of the Mahabharata war. Thirdly, most of the researchers have not read the ancient Indian history properly, as given in in the puranas, Lastly, these scholars don't know which are the right computer softwares to be actually used for dating the events of Ancient India.

I am writing all this with the hope that a time may soon come when the Advaitin group may also encourage research on historicity of the personalities, particulary connected with the dating of Lord Buddha, and Adi Shankara.

Regards,
Sunil KB

Namaste Sunil ji,
Thank you for your mail. I am not sure whether we can stray into that subject of historicity of personalities and of texts. It requires a multi-disciplinary knowledge, which I am sure I do not have. We see such discussions in other groups and the discussions turn very passionate or bitter. At present I am content with studying and teaching practical Vedanta, such as the Gita and the Upanishads. The commentaries of Nilakantha and Shankarananda have good sociological messages for the present day conflicts.

Aravinda Rao

Dear Sri Dhanjibhai,
The two commentaries are in Sanskrit and their Hindi translations are available. I do not  know whether their English translations exist. The Sanskrit original along with the Hindi translations can be had from Chaukhamba Sanskrit books, Varanasi. Their details can be searched online.
Regards,
Aravinda Rao.
