Sometimes it is the story behind the story that attracts us more. For sanskrit scholars, the place and its contributions are no doubt of significance. For the rest of us, a small single bookhouse, striving on for 132 years, charging at give-away rates and giving away as well without charge or prompt payment; the great passion and commitment of its founder - going to kasi and back repeatedly, personally carrying books to all his customers, and now his descendants: the principled stoic response to the question of donation - "no, you can support us by buying our books, or promoting about us to others". They give insight into the culture of a people.
This interviewer lady's family connection with the store and her own passion for sanskrit books were also fascinating to learn; her favourite hobby to window-shop such books! Wide scholarship and book-reading have become niche; and that too for Sanskrit. Her great-grandfather's Brahmasutra commentary, and a Sanskrit translation of the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna by her mother!
