Namaste Subbu ji.

Amazing clarity.

It is something to be realised very clearly and also it should be intuitively appreciated.

What Swāmījī described is the definition of Ānanda-tva in sat-chit-ānanda. It is defined as nirupādhika-iṣṭatva i.e. anya-icchā-anadhīna-icchā-viṣayatva-yogyatva [Advaita Siddhi/Laghucandrikā, page 751]. [आनन्दत्वस्य निरुपाधिकेष्टत्वरूपत्वात् / अन्येच्छानधीनेच्छाविषयत्वयोग्यत्वरूपत्वात्]

What is the meaning of nirupādhika-iṣṭatva?

It basically means desirability without having been caused by any upādhi. It is natural, without the influence of anything. Why do we desire an object? It is for ānanda. So, desiring an iPhone is for something else (ānanda), but desiring ānanda is not for any reason whatsoever. So, there is desirability in ānanda, and it in turn is not dependent on any other desire. So, the desirability of an iPhone is dependent on desire for ānanda, but desire for ānanda is not dependent on any other desire. This is an extraordinary revelation. It is just the nature of ānanda.

Ok. But how does it help me?

If I analyse all my activities, it turns out that they are always for the purpose of myself. The objects/entities/activities are not undertaken, are not dear, because of their own, but because they are for me, they become dear and are undertaken. There is no worth of their own. The worth in them comes up because of them being for me. This is what Br̥hadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad says - आत्मनस्तु कामाय सर्वं प्रियं भवति. Bhagvān Bhāṣyakāra clarifies - कामाय प्रयोजनाय.

Does it not very clearly come out that there is a striking identity between the way ānanda appears to us and the way my own ātmā appears to me. It is for ānanda i.e. my own ātmā that everything else is dear and pursued.

Thus, the identity of ānanda and ātmā is established. Both are objects of love, without any reason whatsoever.

We can go through 23:50 onwards in the following video by Maṇi Draviḍ Śastrī jī:

Regards.
Sudhanshu Shekhar.
