Namaskar:

It is with great sadness that I would like to let everyone know of the passing of our beloved Prof. V. Krishnamurthy, one of the moderators of advaitin since 1998.  We are sorrowed with the news with the recognition that we lost a spiritual giant with a great legacy. He attained Videha Mukti at 11:58 PM Pacific Time on June 20, 2025 in Bangalore. He was 97 years old. Last year I met him and he was healthy and very cordial to us.

It is indeed a great loss for humanity and for the spiritual community around the world. He has written more books in his life and he always remembered to send a copy to me.  He completed writing his last book late last year. Here is a list of a few books that he had written: https://notionpress.com/author/V_Krishnamurthysrsltid=AfmBOoqi52VfQ14sDmi6cu8QRB1ZJNX4ox9c5VFWzQi8gPo3G2uaHLoI

I used call him Mama (uncle) and he was quite active on web forums on the subject of Advaita and has also many postings on YouTube. Here is a link to one of his conversations  on YouTube.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzf7K8uD6A4

His sons and daughters will be attending the Last rites which will be held in Bengaluru.

PraNAms - Sorry to hear that. I have been associated with him for a very long time. He wrote prefaces to two of my books. I wrote one for his book.

After being associated with the adviatin list during the initial years, I met him personally at Madras at his house, when I was doing sabbatical at IIT Madras during 1099-2000. Later, he made arrangements for my talk at the Sanskriti College in Madras. Met him several times, both in Madras and Bangalore, after he moved to Bangalore.

With Salutations

Hari Om!
Sada

Namaskaram,

My thanks to Prof Vk-ji for his kindness, his spritely enthusiasm (which is also evident when we see his videos) and his stately presence in our forum during my early years here. He must have been 79 when I joined. Two particulars that I recall were his approach to several advaita topics using his knowledge of mathematics and his devotion to the kanchi paramacharya (which left us a lasting English translation of the acharya's talks on advaita sadhana). He was respectful to all and to his elder Shastri-ji at the time, and then as he became our senior-most member I saw that he eventually withdrew from participation in our forum. I wondered if this means ailing health etc. but was relieved eventually seeing he was active elsewhere. (Only negative news in this regard came in 2019 when Ram Chandran-ji reported his wife's passing.) Then suddenly some new book or talk by him will pop up (!) and I would feel "ah!!". The most recent was when his name was listed as one of the final speakers at the Global Festival of Oneness for yet another book; searching google I was again happy that he was still well and active into such a ripe age. But, portentously the name was removed from the list as the festival was coming to a close - which I mentioned to Ram Chandran-ji and Subbu-ji.

But this is a full and great life by human standards. He was immersed in advaita and sanatana dharma to the end; and (in my mind) happy and at peace with himself, this life, the journey here and ahead, and ultimately the immutable Truth He is, because of grounding in knowledge. Ishvara will ensure as He has assured that the jivatma, His bhakta, will move forward in the spiritual path in future births; so while there is sadness that someone we knew has left us, there is also a sense of peace and self-surrender to the Divine will which is perfect and that perfection we can relate to better when we see the life of noble people like Prof Vk-ji.

Namaste,

I am sad to hear the news of the passing away of Prof V K ji. He was not only an erudite scholar but also a great devotee and a wonderful human being - always kind, gentle and of noble bearing. He had contacted me in the year 2018 to inform me that he had taken excerpts from a few of my postings to the Advaitin list for his book ‘Thoughts of Spiritual Wisdom’ and we had exchanged a few mails at that time.

One of the things that left a lasting impression on me was the series of postings of Prof V K ji on the Saundaryalahari of Sri Shankaracharya. (I think it was during the years 2005-2006.) I had entreated Prof V K ji on more than one occasion to compile those postings and bring them out in a book form. The last time I had done so was after the old Advaitin Yahoogroup was closed down and the archives of the group were available no more. I felt sad to think that such precious postings would be lost.

This morning, after I read Sri Ram-ji’s message, I was reminded of those Saundaryalahari postings. I casually did an internet search on Google with the keywords “Prof V Krishnamurthy Saundaryalahari” and discovered, to my surprise, that Prof V K ji had indeed compiled all those postings and published it, in the year 2023, as a book titled ‘Paramacharya on Saundaryalahari’ !

I promptly purchased the Kindle version of the book this morning. And when I opened the pages, I found a picture of Prof V K ji’s family deity – Devi Bhuvaneshwari. Was it a coincidence that I had just listened to the Bhuvaneshwari Suprabhatam just a while ago this morning? Perhaps. Or perhaps Devi Tripurasaundari was giving me what I had requested from Prof V K ji all along  -  just at the point of his departure from this bleak earth to Her Divine Radiant Sphere. May Devi Bhuvaneshwari lead his atma to its final destination – the abode of Brahman.

Regards,

Chittaranjan

Oh!!  This is really very sad news!! My heartfelt condolences.  Few years/decades back I used to interact with him a lot.  Infact, he blessed my children after listening to their mantra chanting in FB and suggested them some Stotra pArAyaNa as well on regular basis.   I got the suggestion and blessings from him as well during my vedAnta discussion with him, often, after seeing my rebel attitude on some of the topics he humorously used to tell “don’t pull our legs, let us allow what we want to say”…  With my humble prostrations, I earnestly pray my kula devata for the Sadgati of that departed noble soul.

If any one is having his mail on brahman’s upAdAna and nimitta kAratava and explanations on it, kindly share.

Truly sad news.  He used to task me with writing reviews for some his books in Amazon knowing my novice status in Vedanta. Probably he was paving paths for me to keep going. Very importantly he simplified  the complex so that even a beginner is encouraged to make an attempt to grasp the content.

Sad to hear of ProfVK’s passing. All long-term members of the group will acknowledge his erudition and willingness to help. As well as within the group, I liaised with him through my own website and administratively through the Advaita Academy site, while that existed. Just as an indication of his knowledge and attention to detail, have a look at his ‘definition’ of ‘Brahman’ at https://www.advaita.org.uk/discourses/definitions/brahman.htm back in 2007. My comment on this was as follows:

“Special thanks to Sri ProfVK for a most comprehensive definition of brahman, complete with extensive notes of sources and glossary – quite amazing! I would wish to point out to all other potential definers of terms, however, that we were not expecting such a depth of detail and I would not want them to think that they had to spend so much time and effort, too. If they thought this, we might not get any volunteers!”

Best wishes and condolences to his family,

Dennis

Yes this is an important point. I recall him (also Sada-ji, Subbu-ji) being very helpful and considerate in answering my many questions early on.

Namaskar Chittaji:

Our dear Sunder Huttangadi compiled the articles published by ProfVK on Soundarya Lahiri and put it in pdf format.  Both Sunder and ProfVK are remarkable scholars with great spiritual Legacy. ProfVK is a family friend who always used to talk about my dear sister Soundaram and her noble nature. He was a teacher to dear Venkatesan and later he was his colleague at BITS, Pilani. I have read more than 10 of his books on Hinduism, Gita, and Vedanta. He joined Advaitin a vedatic discussion group started by me in Yahoo. He became a very good friend of me for nearly 26 years. I forwarded several of his books and reviewed many at Amazon! I and Sastrigal family lost a friend, a great scholar and his spiritual legacy will stay for a long time! Interestingly the fathers of ProfVK and me have the same name, Viswanatha Sastri!  Grest soul and will always remain in my memory

Namaste Sri Ram-ji,

Thank you for forwarding the compilation of Prof V J ji's postings on Saundaryalahari made by Sri Sunder-ji. I was not aware that such a compilation existed.

Your mail brings to mind those days back in 2004 when I had joined the group and Sri Sunder-ji, Prof V K ji, Sri Sadaji, Sri Dennis-ji and yourself were all very active in the group. Sri Sadaji was a very prolific poster to the group then, a position which has now been taken over by Sri Subbu-ji.

Yes, Prof V K ji was both an erudite scholar and a wonderful spiritual presence in the group. He was also an accomplished mathematician. I recall that he had once written a paper in which he had attempted to show that the four varnas could be derived as a natural outcome of the distribitutions of the dispositions of gunas among people. One couldn't help but admire Prof V K ji's enthusiasm and novelty of approach to the topic. He was also a very kind person - that quality of his has come across to me on many occasions.

I used to visit Bangalore now and then (I still do) and I had planned to meet Prof V K ji at his house during one of those visits but unfortunately the meeting never took place.

Yes, Prof V K ji was a high soul.

Warm regards,
Chittaranjan

Namaskars to all,
The departure of Prof. V. Krishna Murthy garu is very saddening. He was a jivan mukta who has now attained videha mukti. I was amazed to see his energy and perseverance about two years ago when we met. I was fortunate to have his affection and kindness. He gave me the opportunity to write a foreword to a couple of his books. He was a great combination of modernity harmonized with tradition. His biography gives good glimpses of social history in a turbulent period. My humble pranams to him.
Pranams,
Aravinda Rao

Dear Advaitins,

Just read the sad news.

He was indeed great - a beacon of knowledge and a noble soul.

His voluminous writings will always guide us.  He helped us find ourselves every second of his 97 years.  God was indeed kind to us that He granted the Professor  a long innings.  May he noq rest on His lap peacefully revelling in the Self, the true Advaitin that he was.

Pranams and respects.
