2014 Theme: "Bridging the gap: implementing the rights of indigenous peoples"

The International Day of the World's Indigenous People (9 August) was first proclaimed by the General Assembly in December 1994, to be celebrated every year during the first International Decade of the World's Indigenous People (1995 – 2004).

In 2004, the Assembly proclaimed a Second International Decade, from 2005 – 2014, with the theme of "A Decade for Action and Dignity." The focus of this year's International Day is "Bridging the gap: implementing the rights of indigenous peoples".

The theme aims to highlight the importance of implementing the rights of indigenous peoples through policies and programmes at both the national and international level working together towards this common goal with Governments, the United Nations system, indigenous peoples and other stakeholders.

A special event at UN Headquarters in New York will be held on Friday, 8 August, from 3 to 6pm, featuring the UN Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, the Vice Chairperson of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, a delegate from a member State, a representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, and an indigenous representative. The event will be webcast live atwebtv.un.org.

The first World Conference on Indigenous Peoples will be held on 22-23 September 2014. The meeting will be an opportunity to share perspectives and best practices on the realization of the rights of indigenous peoples, including pursuing the objectives of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

"The interests of the indigenous peoples must be part of the new development agenda in order for it to succeed. […] Together, let us recognize and celebrate the valuable and distinctive identities of indigenous peoples around the world. Let us work even harder to empower them and support their aspirations. "

Note : I am sorry, bellow mentioned Participant will not able to attend. (Sachin Satvi)

But we must send our Community representative/officials for these kinds of Events Through Government (Tribal Development Departments should sponsor)
So Tribal community issue can be represented at international level correctly. Lets try for this

As of now, we communicated list of Tribal community issue in India (Bogus Adivasi, Inclusion of non adivasi into ST, Employment status, Skill development and Educational status of Adivasi, Cultural identity of Adivasi, Administration and governance of TSP area and many more....  ) to UN.

Lets utilize our skill/knowledge/network for creating positive & constructive Administration/governance/leadership for tribal empowerment

Thanks & regards

IMPLEMENTING THE UN DECLARATION ON THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

Order form Although indigenous peoples make up five per cent of the global population, they account for one third of the one billion extremely poor rural people. In addition, indigenous peoples suffer widespread violations of rights and are often excluded from decision making at all levels. This Handbook for Parliamentarians Implementing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples aims to help MPs to take concrete action through legislation, government oversight and resource allocation in order to improve the socio-economic conditions and political marginalization of indigenous peoples.

This publication can be ordered from the IPU Secretariat.
