As presented by the project proponent the proposal involves development of all weather green field Port at Nandgaon, Taluk- Paighar, distt. Thane, Maharashtra. Jindal Group under the JSW Infrastructure Ltd. (JSWIL) has proposed to develop an All-weather Green field at Nandgaon in the Maharashtra State. JSWIL is currently operating two ports one each on Goa and Maharashtra (Jaigarh) and therefore has the requisite experience in the field. The operations and the monitoring mechanisms at the operating ports are widely appreciated by the local authorities and the non-governmental bodies. The proposed port at Nandgaon, Taluk- Palghar, Dist. Thane in the state of Maharashtra, would cater to the local demands of the MIDC as well as the partial demand of the nation as far as the Container traffic is concerned at a later date, when the Dedicated Freight Corridor is operational. The port would be designed to cater to an annual cargo of 7.9 million tons in the first phase, going up to 40 million tons in the final phase.
The all-weather port is proposed to be located on the coastline north of the Mumbai port entrance in the Thane District. The proposed facility is planned near the Nandgaon village, which is 70 km south of Mumbai, and is about 8 km from the Boisar railway station and 25 km from the National Highway number 8. The coastline lies between latitudes 190 45? and 190 49?N and longitudes 720 41?E. Rock outcrops could be seen at low tides occurring in NW-SE direction from the shore. The length of the rocky outcrop is about 1.5 km. The shoreline in the vicinity of the proposed location is generally rocky and fronts a narrow beach. The rocky outcrop on the coastline affords protection from the northern side, from waves coming from the southern side (monsoon period). At the location the tidal flat is 300 m to 400 m wide. The beach is sandy and pebbles can be seen on the beach. The rocky outcrop and the pebbles indicate the sub surface rock. The area behind the tidal flat is lightly built up. The area would be suitable for creating areas of storage and transit shed, which would be created by reclamation. The port will be designed to handle Panamax sized vessels in the first phase and cape size carriers in the final phase. Initial phase will have the south breakwater protecting the two berths one each for the coal and other general cargo and containers. In the final phase however, the northern breakwater would be constructed and totally 7 to 12 berths based on the need shall be constructed. The first phase channel will have a navigable depth of around 15 m which would be increased to 19.8 m in the final phase. The handling equipments would be fully or semi-mechanised fully equipped to prevent pollution while achieving high degree of efficiency. The first phase of the port would be developed at a cost of 674 crores.
