Subject: Kavita walked 25km to fetch water in her tribal hamlet....!

India’s first individual medal in 52 years in a running event at the Commonwealth Games was won today by a 25-year-old tribal woman who grew up running double the distance she covered in the 10,000-metre race — fetching water each time the river flowing through her village Savarpada, 90 km from Nashik in Maharashtra, dried up during summers.

Kavita Raut clocked 33 minutes and 5.28 seconds to win the bronze, the 10th athletics medal India has ever won at the Commonwealth Games. The last individual medal for a Commonwealth Games track event was Milkha Singh’s gold in 1958.

Expectedly, the Kenyans—Kwamboka Grace Momanyi and Chepkwemo Doris Changeywo—won the Gold and Silver. With 1,200 metres to go, Kavita found the energy in her legs and staying power to break from the rest and cross the finish line after the Kenyans. The home crowd roared and Kavita scampered around to find a Tri-colour for a victory lap.

Ban liquor vends in tribal areas: Ministry

NEW DELHI: The tribal affairs ministry wants a ban on liquor vends in tribal areas, identifying alcoholism as a big trap laid out by 'outsiders' to usurp human and natural resources from the indigenous population.

The ministry also wants banks to stop auctioning land belonging to STs on default of loans, as it is seen as a modus operandi for non-tribals to get around the law which bars the sale of tribal land to non-tribals.

These may form part of the ministry's initial thinking for states "to improve the lives of the ST community", as is the mandate of just-formed National Council for Tribal Welfare which is chaired by PM.

Minister for tribal affairs Kantilal Bhuria told TOI, "The states should not give excise contracts in tribal areas. The liquor vends in these places have to be banned." He lamented that states open liquor vends for earning revenue but end up "destroying" the tribals. "Alcohol is used as an addiction to fleece them. It has to be stopped."

The use of alcohol by petty contractors as an instrument to 'colonise' tribals is an image immortalised by films but government concern on this score marks an urgency to focus on the rot.

With anger over land alienation and mining seen as a reason for growth of Naxal activities in forest areas which overlap with tribal habitations, UPA-2 has shown a readiness to revise the policies.

In another move, Bhuria wants banks to stop auctioning the land mortagaged by tribals. He says while non-STs cannot buy land owned by STs, bank auctions in cases of default are proving a cunning antidote to this rule owing to a "nexus between banks and contractors".

He said, "The non-STs, especially contractors, participate in auction and buy the land otherwise owned by a tribal. The auctions should stop in tribal areas or the banks should ensure that non-STs are not part of it."

The land-and-liquor policies are state subjects and it may be difficult to bring them around to giving up revenues by barring excise contracts or by stopping auction of land in tribal areas.

As the banks resort to auctions all around, it may be argued that finding buyers among tribals may be a tough task. But a section believes that land alienation among indigenous population is unacceptable and that is why a law barring its sale was devised.

An optimistic Bhuria said NCTW, which has chief ministers of schedule V and VI areas as the members alongwith key central ministries, will be able to sensitise them into urgent action on these issues.

It is not their whims that they can respond haywire, Toiling tribal girl winning an international acclaim is a matter of inspiration for us & shame for those perpetrators; What is the use of having Minister from your area? Ur advocacy should reflect in action now...TDD has provision for innovative projects every year... Use it....
