BUG: Recent TDL slow startup

I am having issues with TDL startup.

I have V7.0.8 and 7.0.13 installed.  7.0.13 runs off a recent copy of the 7.0.8 .ini.

7.0.8 takes about 5 seconds to open (about 15 tasklists).

7.0.13 takes around a minute to open (the same tasklists).

When I click on a tasklist that I have not yet looked at in 7.0.13, it takes about 5 seconds to appear (spinning cursor).  7.0.8 is instantaneous.

I had similar issues with 7.0.12.

Does anyone know what might be causing this, or what I might do to troubleshoot?

What happens with speed if you rename the current INI and a new one will be created by the software?

Which size has your INI?

It's slower than old version  for me as well, as  there are 5 or 6 task lists,  but do not 5 seconds

If I made 7.0.9 ->7.0.12 available to you (tonight my time) would you be open to running each one to see what update causes the most significant slowdown?

This would help me to narrow down the possibilities when I look at the source code changes.

No difference unfortunately.  Both .inis are about the same size.

Mine has 518 kB, cleaning up with my cleaner reduces it to 280 kB

They were both around 550kb.  I open a few more tasklists,saved and the most recent size is 622kb.  

Now TDL is not recognising the ini (goes into language selection).  The file is still big, but seems to have no content when looked at in a text editor.  Arrghh.

I think I might be having computer issues.

I was going to ask for more info on your ini cleanup utility...

Thanks Dan.  The testing I did seemed to indicate v13 is the problem.  It was much slower than the rest (20 secs vs 1 sec for just the introductory file).  V10 seemed to behave well, although I recall not using it in the past because it had speed issues for me.

HOWEVER, this seems to be PC specific, as I also tested on another computer, there is no appreciable difference.

I seem to be having some computer issues at the moment, so before doing much else, I will be doing some full backups etc...  Also, tonight the current ini doesn't seem to be being recognised.  It says it is 622kb, but appears empty when looked at in a text editor.  Does TDL store any backups of the ini?  If not, I guess I need to start fresh (not the end of the world).

At the risk of a red herring, the only thing I have recently been doing differently, is trying the -z switch.  See my other rambling post.

So for now, I will need to do a bit of work at my end to determine what is going on.  Any ideas welcome though.

I seem to have found the problem.

It is my icons folder.  When I run tdl with the default icon folder, the programme starts up as expected.  If I copy my icons into the icon folder, the slow-down is seen.  The icon folder is about 10.5MB, with about 200 icons.

The slow down is seen from v7.0.10 onward, whether tasklists are open or not.

ps. What actual image format are the majority of your icons?

Tested , having custom icons (even a few small size) increase load time at my end.

Startup speed now appears to be independent of how many icons I have.  Excellent.

Will also trial whether saving speed is improved.  I forgot to mention that that is also slower than it used to be.  But I can't at the moment test this - see other ticket.

Been meaning to follow-up.  There is now also no lag on auto-saving.  Previous versions would freeze for up to 20 seconds while the saving process was going.  In the latest version saving is not noticeable.

Having said that, I was working with a copy of V7.1D7 on the network yesterday, and found the following:

• Startup (to load 4 tasklists, about 200kb) takes about 5 seconds
  
• Auto-saving (every 2 minutes) effectively locks the UI for about 3 seconds 
  

Not major, but annoying.  As stated before, didn't see this prior to V7.09.  Working with a local copy, the saving is much less noticeable.  

Loading of my present set of tasklists takes ~7 seconds, in 3 waves (i.e. TDL window ~<1sec, the tasklists up to the one that last had the focus load first, then the others).  This is normally about 2.5 MB of files.  Interestingly, removing a couple of the larger ones, to reduce the total size to about 1MB doesn't seem to make much difference.

I have not been noticing the auto save function on the local copy.

Not sure if it is relevant, but I am using the -z switch currently.
