For randonneurs lucky enough to live in Edmonton, you can take the other ferry to get to Courtenay. Ride from Edmonton to Prince Rupert on the Yellowhead (1450 km). Take the ferry from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy. Stay overnight in Port Hardy and ride to Courtenay the next day (280 km). That is a good warm-up for the VanIsle 1000. There is a prevailing westerly on the Yellowhead at that time of year and the breeze will help your fitness. The ferry is a day trip so you only have to take one day off the bike.
