Friends, Larry Daniel and I have been in touch relative to our Spring, 2021 meeting.   We have decided to not decide, at least now, in hopes that by the end of February, we would have enough of a “feel” for the availability of the vaccine to be able to plan our meeting. Please keep that last weekend in May open, at least for now.   Indeed, I’d be surprised if you feel confident in any plans that far ahead anyway.

We hope you are all well and have used the “down time” for scholarly pursuits, although being unable to visit libraries and other repositories has likely impacted your research. Personally, I used the time to write a journal article about a local Unionist who interests me (which is still out for review).

Please feel free, as always, to use this group to share news about your work, or the work of others in our area of interest that you can share.    Brighter days are ahead.

Best,

Sam Elliott

Sorry about the confusion.  Yes, the meeting will be in Murray.  I assume the dates will be the same, but I also assume that is based upon the availability of a vaccine.  If one is out by that time, and it appears likely that is the case, then we are good to go.  If not, then we should perhaps poll the membership and get their reaction.  Several  members are well into their 70's, myself included.  Distancing in a conference room will be very limited, not to mention eating out together.  Sorry if I sound overly nervous, but I have lost several friends to Covid, including one in his 50's...

I hope by January or February the dates can be definitively nailed down.  This "wait and see" position is mine only.  I, of course, will go along with the decision of the group.

Hi Stewart:

Short answer, it hasn't been decided yet.  Surely the vaccine will be out by that time, so I see no reason why we would not have it.

Larry and I have decided to forge ahead, with the thought that many of us will be vaccinated by the time May 29 rolls around.   Our 2021 meeting will be at Murray, Kentucky and focus on the Forts Henry and Donelson campaign.   As usual, we would meet for dinner on Thursday night (May 27) have our usual meeting on Friday May 28 and then on Saturday, if there’s no problem with COVID or a shutdown, tour the Ft. Donelson battlefield.

At this point, we’d like a preliminary headcount.    Sort of like the notes you passed your love interest in the 8th grade, please indicate YES, NO or MAYBE so we can start the planning process.

Sam – a cautious Yes for my wife and myself. We will have been vaccinated by that point but want to make sure the new variants of the COVID aren’t going to be an issue. But, put us down for a yes.

Hi Sam and Larry,

Having received both vaccination shots, and considering all other factors, I feel much more positive about the May meeting. I really want to attend. Can you tell me what motel will be used? If I can feel safe about it, then I will plan to be there. Look forward to hearing from you.
