Western Historians, what follows are the preliminary details of our upcoming 2023 conference in Tupelo, Mississippi for May 18-20. NOTE that we are meeting a week earlier than the Memorial Day weekend time that we’ve been on for a few years.
FOR OUR PLANNING PURPOSES, PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE A DEFINITE NO, DEFINITE YES, OR A POSSIBILITY.
Our coordinator/host, Stewart Bennett, has secured a block of rooms at the Comfort Suites in Tupelo with a mix of 15 rooms with a nightly rate of $100 not including tax. It has 4 ½ out of 5 stars and easy access to route 45 to the Civil War Center. Stewart relates that it is a relatively new hotel. For family members who are looking for things to do, the Tupelo Mall is within walking distance or a short car ride. The Malco Theater is also with the Mall. There are also many restaurants and shops for those family members who want those things.
Comfort Suites will hold the rooms for the nights of May 18 and 19. They know that some will only need one night. When making reservations, use the group name "Civil War" with the group number - AR89P9
The hotel has blocked out May 18-20 but knows May 18 and or May 19 are the main dates of our stay.
This is the booking link for guests to book their rooms for May 18th: https://www.choicehotels.com/reservations/groups/AR89P9

We plan to visit Mugshots on Thursday night. Mugshots is mainly a gourmet burger restaurant but have several other things including beer and wine. You can visit their website at https://www.mugshotsgrillandbar.com/websitemenu
Friday morning we shall meet at the Mississippi Final Stands in Baldwyn, just north on Highway 45. Stewart will meet the group at the Comfort suites and lead us to the Civil War Center near Baldwyn. Larry will provide the details on the various sessions for the morning and who is to lead them.
Our hosts will provide cookies and other snacks for the breaks. Also, the Civil War Center will provide lunch. The afternoon program could include a discussion on Tupelo. Stewart believes Tom Parson author of “Work for Giants” on the Battle of Tupelo/Harrisburg will be joining us for the conference and could possibly lead that discussion. Friday evening will be dinner in Tupelo at a restaurant to be named later.
Saturday we will travel to Brice's Crossroad back up Highway 45 from Tupelo. Stewart will plan to lead the tour with help from Tom Parson and Brian Wells (if he attends). We expect for this to be informative and fun. The plan is to go over key areas of the battlefield and complete the tour well before lunch. The plan is to have a tour that is succinct and enjoyable.
If you need to contact Stewart, you may reach him at 662-266-6517 or sben...@bmc.edu
Sam – Cathy and I will be out of the county for a long COVID delayed European vacation. So, sorry, can’t make it this year.
