Dear Western Historians (and prospective members):

COVID notwithstanding, the 2022 meeting of the Historians of the Civil War Western Theater is set for Dalton, Georgia on May 26-28.    Our normal day-long session will be held at the historic Huff House, which was Joe Johnston’s HQ while in Dalton and the site of the discussion of Patrick Cleburne’s “arm the slaves” proposal on January 2, 1864.

We will line up a location for dinner on Thursday May 26 and Friday May 27 for the group, as usual, and hope to have an “on the ground” tour of sites in the Dalton area on Saturday morning, May 28 for those who want to stay over and participate.

We do not have a “headquarters” hotel for this meeting as we are meeting at a historic site.   There is a new Fairfield Inn in Dalton and a nice Hampton Inn.

The purpose of this e-mail is to:

1. Get a preliminary headcount
2. If you are coming, say whether you would prefer the Fairfield or the Hampton, so it would be possible for those of you who are coming to congregate at one or the other for fellowship after dinner or at breakfast

Also, we are including on our list a couple of historians who have indicated an interest in joining, but who have not submitted their one-time fee of $100.00.   You can contact me relative to attending to that small, but necessary, detail.

We have included persons who because of their Western Theater scholarship, might be interested in joining us.   Our group was originally formed ca. 1997 by John Marzalek and Mike Ballard, and with the exception of 2020, have met yearly at a site significant to the Civil War Western Theater, as far east as North Carolina, as far west as Arkansas, as far north as Springfield, Illinois, and as far south as Shreveport.   It is our practice to meet in Chattanooga (or in this case, the Chattanooga area) every other year because of it's central location.    There is a one-time joining fee of $100.   If you are interested, please contact the undersigned by private e-mail.

Larry Daniel and I look forward to hearing from you all.

Best,
Sam D. Elliott

I plan on attending. I have no preference on the hotels. Both are fine.

I plan to be there.  Having never stayed at the Fairfield I have no idea whether I would prefer it or not, but I've always had good experiences at Hampton Inns.

Sam, great to see you on Saturday! I will attend Friday’s session, and maybe Saturday, but will drive back and forth from Kennesaw instead of getting a hotel room.

I look forward to seeing everyone after missing last year.

Stay safe!

Sam,

I have a person interested in joining our group that meets the requirements. I do not have your private e-mail to send him. Would you send me your email please. I can be reached at sben...@bmc.edu       Thank you for your help.

Hey Sam,

I lost Larry's message and thus his email address. Nor do I have his telephone number. Consequently, Iam replying to you. Yes, I will introduce the Sherman-Atlanta session.

Also, I vote for the Hampton Inn, although my input may be too late. Tim Johnson says he is interested in coming, and likely in joining. I hope he will. Hope, too, that John Hubbell is able to attend.

I look forward to the meeting.

I am sorry to send this one to everyone.  But, like James, I don’t have Larry’s email.   Please put me down as attending.   I have no preference on the hotel.

Best Wishes,
