Background = John Lynch has access to a big cruising sailboat. He invited me, Leith and a couple of other guys to go on a ride today. There is a lot of time to tell stories on these types of adventures.

Story one = One of the other guys, Ron, told a story about a sailboat trip a while back. He was sitting on the seat when he noticed a wallet slide across and fall into the water. Then he realized that it was his wallet. Leith said, "You probably would have reacted quickly and grabbed the wallet if you knew that it was yours." Everyone found the humor and chuckled politely. Little bit later Ron was unable to find his cell phone. Then Leith said, (and this is perhaps Leith's finest moment ever) (he actually said this) "I saw it slide across and fall in the water. But I knew it wasn't mine so I didn't grab it." I laughed so hard bits of food spit out of my mouth and tears streamed from my eyes. After a while I was able to regain a shred of composure. I looked around and found that only Leith and I were laughing. The other three guys were looking at us like we were idiots. A long awkward silence followed.

Story two = John Lynch asked me, "Why does everyone call you Sheriff Baker?" I explained that Jahn Tiahnsky gave me that name when I beat him. JT said, "There is a new Sheriff in town." John Lynch asked, "When was that?" I explained that JT is a moderately good sailor and beating him is somewhat significant. It was Tuesday 8/18/20. It was a light wind day. Seven boats raced that day. I was on my Boyer Acat Wild Thing. JT was on his Boyer Acat Off The Grid. So, he and I were on pretty much the same type of boat. Well, I beat him pretty bad. He later told us that he sulked home and stepped on his cat's tail (feline creature with four legs, pointy ears and long tail). We all know that JT is quite the story teller. It seems odd to me that I never heard JT tell this story.

Adding some texture to Leith & John’s laughter about the cell phone. Ron clearly does not share the same sense of humor as found among the A- cat crowd.
Watching these two laughing it up was like watching school kids laugh when a teacher gets locked out of the room!

John,

Sounds like Ron had a really bad day..

I just want to point out that neither Leith nor Sheriff Baker own or sail an A Cat.  Leith sails an F16 (not a A Cat), and Sheriff Baker sails what at one time was a very nice A Cat but is currently actually NOT an A Cat, but rather a cobbled-together F16 wannabe contraption.

I want you to know that us actual A Catters are much more compassionate and empathetic than those two, and any genuine A catter would likely have jumped in after Ron's phone in an attempt to save it.  His wallet too..

Just sayin.

On behalf of A Catters everywhere, kind regards,

Jahn

Both John’s didn’t explain the tone of the joke. It was a wonderful sailing day, sunny with mild wakes and increasing winds up to 12 knots so everyone was gleaming and in high spirits. The mild sailing condition allowed us to start telling our sailing stories as we cruised along. One of Ron’s stories of past, he saw a wallet sliding on the deck wandering whose wallet it was but not retrieving it before falling off the boat. Ron then realized it was his wallet. I jovially asked: Why didn’t you just catch it before it fell off? Slight chuckles from everyone and we continued with story telling.
Two hours later Ron states he can’t find his phone. I saw Ron felt the phone in his other pocket and I saw an opportunity to provide a sarcastic joke before he announced the phone was found, so I commented: I was a mobile phone sliding on the deck and wondered whose it was before falling into the water. John B and I did start laughing without the three other members but I didn’t think Ron’s feelings where hurt, especially since he was an old Navy sailor.
Five seasoned sailors on a six hour cruise should expect some sarcasm. Overall we got along very well and thank John L for the invitation.

Best Regards,
Leith
