Started early (OCS) to ensure I was out front. Blazed a trail to RR and had a good starboard leg upwind, slowed down to tack, came in and flipped in a puff. Ended up breaking three battens and took it easy coming in. Bravo to those that made the entire course!
Good to see so many boats tonight!

Better to break battens than a mast.

I drifted back at the start and didn't have a sight down the line, but yes Pat it looked like you were a couple of boat lengths over.

Arete: 1:08:07

We capsized twice. First time was on the sketchy reach between the shoal pin and the rhode river red. We recovered relatively quickly that time and kept going. Second time, the fault of trying to get back in it, was during the first of two gybes needed to make the rhode river on the last downwind; we overstood on the first downwind, so "played it safe" and ended up needing to gybe in 22kts of breeze to make the mark. Went swimming for 7min while Expletive stood by. At least the water was warm and we survived to finish the race.

There is video from the start out there...Pat was over by 2 boat lengths or so. The rest of us undershot by 2 boat lengths.

Predictable Urge DNF
I am not the kind of guy who likes to brag. But I was first again last night. I was first to chicken out. Mary said that I should get the Chicken Finger Award.
I launched and never felt in control. I sailed around for a while just trying not to crash into another boat. I crossed the start line about four minutes after the start. About two minutes after that, I turned around and went back to the club.

Atomic Bumblebee DNF
Unlike John I totally felt in control, I just couldn’t figure out why things not going my way :)
I flipped right after the first windward mark while trying to gybe with a spinnaker up. I was still in control, mind you. I just decided to control my swimming.  And swimming I enjoyed so much, so, at the end, I sailed to the beach being second boat to the club after Predictable Urge.

Someone once said, "discretion is the better part of valor"

I say "Bullshit.. go big or go home!"  I learned that from Chris Ford.

Another great start for 233 but ultimately DNF.  This time almost made it to Rhode River mark before my first capsize!  I was flying like a bird...then diving like submarine.  After righting the boat went right over on the other side but I'm not counting that one since I wasn't on the boat.

Another capsize after rounding the Rhode River mark and then a couple stalled tacks left me stranded in the shallows on the north side of the river for my third capsize.  Had to put the mast up in the reeds to get the boat safe and under control for righting.  In process busted tiller extension and one fin on starboard rudder.  😞

Applying Bobby Orr's 3 capsize limit I then called it a day!

Still having fun and getting lots of exercise.

Phil

P.S.  My daughter suggests "Topsy Turvy" for my as yet unnamed boat.

"Topsy Turvy" would be more appropriately used as a nickname for Phil instead of as a name for the boat. Bill Kast (previous owner of boat in question) never capsized the boat four times in one day. Yes. If you capsize, right the boat and it capsizes to the other side, it counts as two.
Try it. Phil "Topsy Turvy" Beierl. See how easily it flows off of the tongue. Just like John "Wrong Way" Geiger and Sheriff Baker.

Bovine DNF.

Fun and a little scary at the same time.  Bovine was making some interesting noises from the mast.  We started and took the reach from the shoal mark to R2.  Seeing the conditions at R2 Bovine tucked her tail between her legs and sailed home.

The Expletive time:  1:01:43.

We stopped our watches while watching to make sure Arete got its crew back on board and sailing properly, and then started watches again when we reached the same position were we stopped them

We raced conservatively  most of the time, and that kept us from flipping.  We were a bit nervous the whole time, but we both very much enjoyed the exciting racing conditions.

Thanks Sam for mentioning in your email how close (or not) everyone was from the starting line.  I think most everyone was a bit nervous at the starting line.

Falcon: DNF

Made 3 of the 5 marks and came in.  Great sailing on the way in, but a bit rough out there between RR and Parish.

MKF’s time 55:13.

Last night was a blast. Big thanks goes out to Todd for keeping the pointy end up. Big thanks to Chris for having faith that Todd and I would not mount another yellow boat in those conditions.

Glad everyone made it back to the beach and then to the bar safe 👍

My max speed yesterday was 18.9kts, max 10s avg was 16.7kts.  It was definitely a hoot yesterday!
