Hi, everyone. Does anyone have a serviceable Nacra I20 mainsail you are willing to let go?
And what sailmaker is default for Nacra sails nowadays? I have seen recent sails on i20 at the club, what’s the deal?
I am trying to put together Nacra i20 for kids to use, apparently sails are worse than I remembered.
Thanks.
Vlad.

Elliot Pattison was the class sailmaker if memory serves. In Costa Mesa California.

The newest sails were developed by Glaser sails.  They have since shuttered their operations, but I think someone bought out all of their designs.  Sam is in Italy right now but I think he knows the deal and has the contacts for who bought out the assets from Glaser.

I think Chris Allen has measurements for the new sails.  If you can get those, you might be able to get Landenberger or Randy Smyth to build some new ones.

I just ordered a jib for my trimaran from Randy and was pleasantly surprised with the price.

Hopefully these other guys will chime in.

cheers,

TB

Thank you. I contacted Elliot Pattison recently to get a quote for new Nacra F17 sail and it was steep, imho. I also talked to Marchals. Even steeper.
Another question. How different were newer i20 with aluminum masts? I have a good deal on the mainsail built for aluminum mast. Will it fit carbon mast? Are aluminum masts flexer?
Should I skip the sail or I will feel no difference?

Todd is right, we’re in Italy trying to squeeze 110 F18’s into parking for 25…the 55 boat start line (split fleet) is going to go from one side of the lake to the other…

Bolton is correct, Marchal bought the Glasers loft.  He should have the designs for the sails the club fleet bought (and a decksweeper design I’ve seen in person, very fast). Chris Allen has the rules for the sails, limiting head size, banning the DS, and incorporating the F18 class rules for limits on cloth (basically no 3Di, carbon or technora in the cloth, though you may want to reconsider with technora/dyneema blends being the latest tech and pretty durable).

Yes, Marchal are more expensive than EP. I wouldn’t touch a new EP main with a 34’ tall pole-the design is stuck in 2005 and the quality control never that high. Some were great, most were mediocre. Performance sails in Europe can also build sails (they are the class sailmaker for Nacra now) and I’m sure Martin @ 1D would design a fast set. Landenberger is good but I’d be a little concerned about getting a jib that fits. He would probably be the least expensive.

The mainsail for an aluminum rigged I20 will need a different luff curve fitted for the carbon mast, and will also be short sail area as the aluminum mast is bigger than the carbon mast. Yes the aluminum mast is much more flexible, therefore de-powering more easily, but also powering up earlier as the wing section is larger. It has been found to be faster, but personally I wouldn’t want to sail with it at 400+ lbs of crew weight, nor do you want to go buy one and an appropriate main ($4k+ for the rig alone).

Good luck,
Sam

What Sam said.

His comments about EP are spot on. Felix at Landenberger makes a very nice sail that is well finished, just make sure your measurements are VERY good before ordering.

You might consider GP sails in the UK as well.

If you go with Performance, make 100% sure that it's cut for the carbon mast. In addition to what Sam said, several of the mounting points are different. So, not only is the rate of bend different between the aluminum and carbon sticks, WHERE they bend is also not the same.

Unfortunately, I'd be worried about tarrifs right now as well. Normally sails are 0%, but I'm not sure what's going on presently. I'd definitely check before ordering as you could add quite a lot to the total if it's 20%.

Good luck in Italy Sam!

Thank you everyone. I agree about EP. I have never being happy with F17 sails and I have old and worn sail from Glasser which still outperforms originals.  Understood about the sail for an aluminum mast. Although disappointed. It’s new Performance sail for half a price.
Ditto on tariffs. I ordered a pair of jib cars, $40 a piece from Nacra, got hit with the tariff bill from fedex two weeks after delivery.
Is Chris Allen a member of the club? I would like to get those measurements. Thanks!
Vlad.
