Join us August 2, 2025, for a 205k RUSA Brevet, the Midnight Rider.
This route starts in the city of West, Texas, and goes east to Fairfield.  Stores are about 20 miles apart and are open 24 hours, so it works well for hot days or for overnight riding.

Start time:  Pending- we may ride this with a normal daylight start (7:00 AM or so), a pre-dawn start, or as an overnight ride (start 7:00 PM on the night of August 2nd).  PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHICH OPTION(S) YOU ARE INTERESTED IN.  We'll try to adjust to make the most people happy.  Check back to confirm the time before heading out!

Start Location:  Meet up at the West City Hall, approx. 110 N Reagan St, West, TX.  There are parking spaces in front of City Hall and on Pine Street just south of City Hall (avoid the 15 minute spaces, of course).  We will meet up there, then ride to the Dollar General, which is the official start control.  Probably best to make any potty stops on the way in, rather than the way out.

This is a RUSA brevet.  It does not count towards certain ACP awards, but you do get extra time and extra mileage credit for the extra 5k distance.

Lone Star Randonneurs membership is required.  See the LSR site, and get the form and payment into Dan prior to the ride.

RUSA membership is required.  See the RUSA website for details.

Lights and reflective gear will be required for the overnight or pre-dawn start options, and are recommended for normal daylight starts, just in case you take unduly long due to searing heat or other issues.

This is an east-west route.  With a morning start, you ride into the sunrise in the morning and into the sunset in the evening.  Consider a visor, and consider using daytime blinky lights.  The overnight option may be cooler, but sometimes, it's just 100% humidity all night, too, so it can still be a sweatbath.  Sleep issues can be a concern as well.

A waiver is attached.  Please complete, print, sign, scan, and email to both me and Dan and then bring the original to the ride start.  If you have already sent Dan a waiver for this ride, you don't need to duplicate it.

Road conditions:  Unknown.  We rode this a year ago, I think there was some construction then, but that should all be finished, and I don't know if they've started any other construction since then.

Ride With GPS file is here:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44445557

Weather forecast:  Not available yet, but expect Hot.  Check the forecast, be prepared.  Camelbaks and bottles recommended.  Ice up at the stores if necessary.  I don't recall much if any shade along this route, either.

Check back for updates closer to the ride start.  Email with waivers or any questions.

We plan to join in and prefer a standard post sunrise start, but will try to go with the flow.

As miserable as it was at 730 this morning, I may prefer earlier than later even though it will muck up my sleep :(

If there’s a 300k or 400k version hiding in the bushes, I can justify the pilgrimage to West, TX from Oklahoma. I’m always up for a nocturnal sweat-fest — night rides are my jam — but I’m flexible. Just tell me when to show up with lights, caffeine, and poor judgment.

Update:
Start time:  6:45 AM, morning start on Saturday morning. This is also sunrise time, so a daylight start.
Riders:  Dan, Pam, Amy, Stephen.
Route Note:  On the return, the road between Coolidge and Hubbard has been "milled" leaving a rough surface undesirable for riding.  We can detour by the way of the out-bound route to avoid this (5.9 miles extra), or detour through Dawson to avoid this (5.0 miles extra) or just deal with it.  We will confirm at the ride start which option.
Forecast:  Low of 74 Friday night, high of 93 Saturday, 64% humidity, mostly sunny, winds ENE at 5-10 mph, 24% chance of rain ("A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible").  So expect some sweat.  Check the forecast just prior and be prepared for whatever is out there.
