Hi Trailers,
This week we’ll start at Newlands Forest car
park and head towards Rhodes Memorial to visit all three blockhouses.
Route
We start with a good warm up to Rhodes Memorial, then up the steps at the back of the Rhodes Mem carpark to the jeep track that runs above. We’ll continue around the side of Plum Pudding Hill and take the right hand trail where the jeep track splits, and then the short out-and-back to the right to tag the Prince of Wales blockhouse.
Returning to the jeep track, we’ll climb the zig zag road, but continue straight at the end of the second zig where we’ll take the single track on the left leading up to the Queens blockhouse.
After visiting the Queens blockhouse, the single track continues climbing up and along towards the Kings blockhouse and joins the contour path below the Kings Blockhouse. There is a steep climb up to the Kings blockhouse and then back to the turnstile and along the contour path towards Newlands ravine.
There’s an optional extension for the longer runners here: taking the single track above the King’s blockhouse, run towards the gate at Tafelberg Road and loop back to the blockhouse when your legs are nicely stretched.
Depending on the distance you want to cover – continue along the contour
path and boardwalks, and choose one of the many routes back down to the
start.
Rendezvous and start time
RV in Newlands Car Park at 07:00 ready to start running at 7:15am.
A reliable source advises that there is now a coffee truck operating from Newlands
car park from 7am, meaning that car thefts have diminished and your caffeine fix
can be satisfied.
Terrain and distance
Jeep track and single track with plenty of hill climbing.
Distance about 14 kms and 500m ascent, but can be lengthened to 22km with 800m
elevation for those training for longer events and trimmed down to 11kms for those
wanting to do less. Either way, plan for a minimum of 2 hours, possibly 3.
Groups
This is a pack run with regular regroups, we will split into speed groups
with leaders and sweeps on the morning.
Walking group to be arranged in the TMT Walking
WhatsApp group. Please contact me if you would like to be added to this group.
Dogs
Please note that K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs.
What to bring
Water, whistle, warm/windproof top depending on weather, space blanket, ICE
ID - either on your phone, bracelet/tag, card in your backpack.
Important: Please remember to look behind you at
every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you
are going. Leaders of each group will ensure that no-one is
left behind. Please keep the groups together and ensure that no-one is left on
their own.
See you on Saturday!
