Hi all,
I have some updates from the meeting last night-
The plans for Father Capp are sadly, far more limited than the meeting notice made it seem. The DOT is only looking at a very small portion of Father Capodanno between Midland Ave and the dead-end turn-around. It's part of a larger road dieting plan in response to a pedestrian fatality at Lincoln and Father Cap last year. The good news is that the DOT looks primed to go forward with plans with or without CB2's approval.
Attached are some slides from last night showing the current plans, though there will be slight adjustments in response to feedback received last night.
Also, the project lead for this was identified as Maggie Loesch from the DOT. No contact info was given for her, but I'm guessing it's mlo...@dot.nyc.gov.
You can also give feedback to the CB2's District Manager at dder...@cb.nyc.gov but I would focus on reaching out to the DOT with feedbackOn Tue, May 6, 2025 at 2:29 PM Robert DeBiase <robert....@outlook.com> wrote:
Some additional thoughts regarding Capodanno bike lane. Better late than never.
I thought there were signs saying no bike riding on boardwalk. Was I imagining things?
There is a pathway parallel to the boardwalk for bike riders, but there are typically as many pedestrians on the pathway as on the boardwalk.
What happens when the Army Corps of Engineers finally starts construction of the Sea Wall?

I am also disappointed that it's for such a small section. More annoying but we'll see how it works.
Thanks very much for sharing the info, Rose! I'm with you that it's a disappointment that they are only proposing the change for a few blocks at the end of the line; however, maybe it's just as well, since I don't like the design, especially the parking-protected lane. I've ridden a lot of those lanes in Manhattan and most decidedly do NOT find them to be a safety enhancement. Putting the bikes on the other side of the parked cars takes us out of the consciousness of drivers; consequently exacerbating the conflict at every intersection. I would much rather be next to the traffic so they are aware of me as they approach an intersection preparing to turn. It would be even better if New York could adopt the California rule that calls upon drivers to merge into the bike lane (whether real or imaginary) prior to turning rather than cutting in front of cyclists (which drivers so often do, rather than letting bikes get through the intersection before they (the drivers) turn across the bike lane.I would also like to see a design for this project to reflect something that could be useful on the rest of Father Cap Blvd, which the current proposal doses not. I would propose the alternative as follows: Reduce the center median strip to 9 feet, allowing room for a 10 ft lane next to the center median, a 15-fi lane with sharrows, and a 9-ft parking lane, as shown in the sketch below.
