JUBA, 17 February 2014 [Gurtong] - “The attack took place within Baliet County main town where Riek loyalists attempted attacks on SPLA barracks and Baliet head quarters,” the minister said.

“Baliet County is one of the counties that had been battled for many times since the rebels defected and attacked Malakal town last year. Several fighting has been continuing in the area.”

Jiben said that the rebels have been flushed out of the main town of Baliet. “SPLA forces are determined to ensure full control and ensure peace to its citizens,” he said.

Gurtong was not able to speak to the commissioner of Baliet as there was no good connection due to network error.

The earlier the fighting in Baliet displaced more than 70,000 civilians from the Payams of Adong, Abwong, Nyong-kuach, Gel-Achol and Kuel.

The commissioner Mr. James Tor Monybuny reported to Gurtong that many civilians mostly the women and children in the county have been displaced as many others were also killed.

Out of the 13 counties, the rebels control Ulang, Nasir, Longechuk and Maiwut counties.
