Citizens inside the UN camp in Bor town in South Sudan’s Jonglei State
said the sounds of light guns were heard within the town on Sunday.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, several internally displaced
families said the sounds of gunfire near the airport created fear
among them.
The displaced people said they fear that the 2014 massacre of dozens
of civilians in the UNMISS base in Bor could repeat itself at any
time, while calling on the UN mission in the country to protect them.
For his part, the Governor of Jonglei State, Philip Aguer admitted
that there was a random shooting in Bor town.
However, he said the shooting was contained by the relevant
authorities. Aguer pointed out that the shooting started after local
chiefs organized a welcoming ceremony for youth who returned back from
fighting with cattle raiders.
