Equatoria leader in UK decries abuses, calls on Kiir and Machar to go

LONDON (21 Sep.)

Federico Vuni, Chairperson of the Equatoria Community says President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar should step down from power for failing South Sudan.

Voni told Radio Tamazuj that the ongoing conflict in South Sudan is not over power and wealth, saying the country is in chaos. The community leader blamed the current government for defections of Equatoria sons, while condemning military campaign in the Equatoria region by the government.

" We continuously receives credible reports of government forces engaging in both targeted murder of civilians and looting of properties", reads parts of a press release.

Voni accused President Kiir’s faction of opposing peace, saying the recent move to dishonour the peace agreement is the replacement of Riek Machar with Taban Deng Gai as First Vice President.

The community leader demanded the formation of a broad-based coalition government for peace-building to succeed in South Sudan. He also called upon the UN Security Council to support the development of a broad-based political coalition as the most effective means to achieving stability and sustainable peace-building in South Sudan.

According to the Equatoria community in UK, the UN Security Council should facilitate a national conference comprising all political and civil society stakeholders, balanced by grassroots representation from South Sudan’s three regions.

The Equatoria community leader also called for imposition of an arms embargo on South Sudan to stem the flow of weapons.
