More than 5,500 have fled the country within only two days, as refugees, to Uganda, the UN High commissioner for Refugees has said.

It says they crossed into Arua district on the 16th and 18th of this month, and several are still arriving.

In a statement, the UNHCR says refugees are increasingly using several undesignated border crossing points.

The points include Busia, Angili, and Chikulia.

It says the refugees are using those illegal crossing points to avoid confrontation with armed groups.

The agency says more than 7,500 refugees have been relocated from Adjumani, Arua and Moyo to Bidibidi settlement in Yumbe, bringing the number in Yumbe to over 90, 000 refugees.

“In a bid to decongest Ocea Reception Centre, 1,026 individuals were relocated to the newly-opened Ofua village within Rhino Refugee Settlement,” it said in a report.

There are more than 300,000 South Sudanese refugees sheltering in Uganda, according to the UN agency.
