A parent denied allegations of forcing his underage daughter to marry
a soldier in Wulu County calling it propaganda.
Mudir John Marktap told Good News Radio on Thursday that the story ran
by Sudan Tribune that his daughter Rebecca Atong Madang was forced to
marry a soldier was false.
He said his daughter is matured and has already a child outside marriage.
Mr John added that arrangements preceding her marriage were lawful and
followed traditional practices.
He appealed to media practitioners to distance themselves from family matters.
Mr John revealed that the Atong’s marriage was misinterpreted due to
ongoing disagreements between the parents of the girl that resulted in
a court case.
He said the police only collected Atong from school to give her
testimony to court since she was the centre of the problem.
Atong confirmed over the phone from Wulu County that she was harassed,
beaten and forced to marry the soldier.
She said her uncles also beat the mother for resisting the marriage.
Ms Atong said she did not want to marry a soldier.
She added that Mr John will never tell the truth because he does not
want to lower his dignity.
