Cabinet to discuss Kiir's commitment to announce unilateral ceasefire

JUBA (31 Mar.)

South Sudan’s Council of Ministers plans to discuss the recent call by the East African regional bloc IGAD to stop fighting and Kiir’s commitment to announce a unilateral ceasefire, a top government official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Martin Elia Lomuro, said: “This is not a decision taken by the government; it was a resolution came up during the IGAD summit. So, it was just a proposal to the president and it will be presented to the cabinet to discuss how it can be implemented.”

In a communiqué issued following its 30th Extra-Ordinary Summit held last Saturday in Nairobi, IGAD called upon all factions to immediately stop the fighting in South Sudan.

In response to this call, President Kiir agreed to announce a unilateral ceasefire and grant amnesty to those that renounced violence.
