TORIT, 16 August 2017 [Gurtong] –This follows Monday's heated debates
held in the assembly’s hall, in Torit, following summons of two
ministers of Education and that of Finance, by the State Lawmakers.
Meanwhile, the State Finance Ministry has been tasked to forge close
cooperation with the Education Ministry by ensuring that pay
increments and allowances are given to teachers to for morale support.
The State Education Minister, Hassan Urbano Alex admitted that most
schools in the Counties are no longer operating due to teachers
leaving their profession in search of other odd jobs in
non-governmental organisations.
He also reported that most of the teachers among those deserting the
profession are even serving on voluntary basis.
"Many teachers, I have noted, have continued to remain volunteers who
are not in the government's payrolls. How do we expect them to
demonstrate commitment when they don't have any compensation?" Hon.
Urbano said.
He revealed that a school run by volunteers in Imilai Boma of Geria
County was shut down because all part time teaching force left for a
Timber Company Limited for employment purposes.
He also added that security threats have also made many schools to
close down across the State.
