The area and rebels involved have not experienced fighting for quite some time. A new report claims Sudan continues to import and export arms despite international embargoes. The Conflict Armament Research group notes how Sudan continues to import and manufacture considerable amounts of weapons, exporting to non-state armed groups in South Sudan, Syria, Libya, among others countries. Given this evidence, Khartoum's interest in curbing internal military offensives appears unlikely. Read more.

Internal rifts within the SPLM-N rebel movement has triggered violence in Blue Nile and in the neighbouring Maban refugee camp, South Sudan. The incidences could complicate future peace talks and incur more tensions as refugees flee back to Blue Nile State where food insecurity persists. The UN reports that thousands are now displaced from the violence. Read more.
