The Governor of Maiwut State, Bol Ruach, has appealed to aid groups to
resume operations in the area.
Early this month, several humanitarian groups, including the
International Committee of the Red Cross, suspended operations there
due to fighting between the government and opposition forces.
The ICRC had been providing medical services and life-saving
assistance to people in the State.
“The UN, the ICRC, and all the other organizations need to come back
to the state. We need you to provide services to my people,” Governor
Ruach said.
The aid agency is yet to comment on the matter.
The humanitarian organization started airlifting its staff and some
patients during the first week of July to old Fangak in the former
Jonglei State as a precautionary measure.
It said the group would resume activities in the area as soon as the
security situation improved.
However, the governor says the government clashed with the opposition
force and captured the town on Thursday last week.
“We were engaged early in the morning of 27 and we defeated the
opposition force; we captured the town, the capital of Maiwut state,”
he stated.
The opposition is yet to react to this report.
