March 8, 2014 (ADDIS ABABA) – A senior opposition woman leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has called on the women worldwide to draw a special attention to the ongoing plight of the vulnerable hundreds of thousands of women in South Sudan.

Angelina Teny, wife of the ex-vice president, Riek Machar, now rebel leader, said there is an appalling situation being faced by women in South Sudan following the 15 December violence and called on women across the globe to speak on their behalf as they commemorate the International Women Day.

"I do recognise the responsibility of women being the voice of the voiceless and therefore I call on them to exercise such moral responsibility in support of and solidarity with women in South Sudan after the violence," Teny said in a statement to Sudan Tribune on Saturday.

"I call on them to condemn the genocide taking place in South Sudan," she said, adding that the world organizations should put pressure on the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) to withdraw from South Sudan.

Teny who takes part in the Addis Ababa peace talks with the government also called on the women leaders at the levels of the United Nations and the African Union not to be silent but to use their influence in ensuring a peaceful resolution to the 3-month old conflict in the young country.

She further called on the international media to rise to their responsibility to let the world know about the current situation in the country.

The woman political leader, who once served as state minister of petroleum in Sudan, congratulated the women leaders worldwide for the day.

At least one million people, mostly women and children, are displaced and in dire conditions in South Sudan in the aftermath of the mid-December violence, according to the United Nations reports.
