South Sudan government agrees to remove illegal roadblocks

South Sudan government has agreed to remove all illegal checkpoints along the roads to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery across the country.

This comes during a meeting between South Sudan’s Cabinet Affairs Minister Martin Elia Lomuro and UN’s humanitarian coordinator Eugene Owusu in Juba on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Minister Martin said they discussed the challenges facing humanitarian aid delivery in the country. He further said the denial of humanitarian access is not a national policy.“We held the second meeting of the humanitarian high-level oversees committee that was set up by the presidential decree to oversee the challenges and operation of the humanitarian agencies,” he said.“We also have decided to discuss first the unfortunate incident that occurred over the weekend leading to the death of six humanitarian workers,” he added.

The official further said the committee discussed other issues related to the permit levy to the humanitarian agencies and how to investigate the killers of six aid workers and take them to court.

For her part, Joyce Luma, Country Director of WFP, said the humanitarian agencies always get their permission from the national government. However, she said the humanitarian agencies always face difficulties when they reach at the states level.
