Hi coaches,

Our team has hard time with rocks and minerals event.

Any recommendations or tips on how to crack this event. We have a lot of materials but some rocks has different colors and they are very hard to identify.

One way I got my students to study was to have them create their own "cheat sheets". I would help them create a table with all the info they would need for each mineral and/or rock. Then they would use google to look up each rock/mineral to find pictures (they could use as many as they wanted but in fact it gave them the idea that there were many different versions). They would fill in all the information for the table from any resource including the book (thus learning how to use the book as well). They were often able to use the notebook/references easily because they created them. Just a thought for you.

Do your kids use Discord?  There's an ID bot that takes lots of images from the internet and kids can spend hours practicing identification.  The join link is here: https://discord.gg/2HbshwGjnm

I have my kids make dichotomous keys for identification.  Their binder pages are all the same layout so the same information is in the same place on each page.
