Hello,

We are a rookie team in Div B and have a few logistics questions.

a.  Can someone please explain this:? Should we take an event and write the exam for that event? and if yes how can we participate in that event?

EVENT SUPERVISOR registration is open on the website at this time.  In addition, the coach should email me the specific person who will be the ES for the event so that I can assign the event to them on the website.  The Event Supervisor is responsible for submitting their specific test to me (sccs...@gmail.com) for approval.  The deadline for test submission is March 1, 2025.

Thanks,
Preethi

Often, invitationals will require all teams to help write exams. You can reach out to parents and see if anyone can do it. If not, maybe an alumni student or coach. In my early years, I wrote them with some help of alumni students as I'm not a content expert in ANY of these topics and it's best to have someone who really understands the topics and can grade accurately/fairly. You will also usually need a team of graders. Whoever writes the exam should not be sharing with anyone who would be taking the exam. Also, parents of kids taking that exam should not be grading.

I would also suggest that you keep the exam writing private from students who will be in the event on your team. Everyone is running an event, but should not give their team any undue advantage. Each year we need to help out by running something. Hopefully we can develop a skill that will make us the 'go to' person for a specific event after a number of years. For example, make a unique Write it Do it model JUST FOR THAT specific event. Then every participant has a fair shot at the event. Hopefully, after a number of years, you will be the go-to person for WIDI (or whatever). Hoping that helps. I am a veteran B division coach. Feel free to message me directly as well.

Hi All,
I have been a Science Olympiad Coach for 2 years now. The team decided to attend invitations at Harvard and Brown this year for extra practice. However, they are struggling to pass the practice tests. How can I help them get better at taking these tests? We are struggling with Mission Possible. We are a Division B team. Any advice on helping students get better is appreciated.

Thanks,
Trish

One mental test I do when coaching an event that I am possibly or certainly writing a test for is asking myself, "Would I give this same hint/advice/knowledge to the competition?"   So, for example, I am the WIDI writer for our Regional and State tournaments and I try to NOT help the WIDI pair for the team I am associated with.  I refer them to other knowledgeable teens or adults for help, but if I get a question regarding the event, I try to answer it as if answering our rival team.  So, if the WIDI writer asks, "How should I space the write-up so that the doer doesn't 'get lost' as he builds?" I would answer, "You two need to work together to find a format that the builder's eyes naturally go to the next direction.   Play around with spacing between steps, numbering or using an asterisk as a bullet."   I would tell that to ANY competing team - it's common sense and it's not any sort of inside information.   Similarly, if a Dynamic Planet (I've run that one too) pair asks, "How should I study for this?"   I would say, "You never know what you'll get on the test, but a good test will have a balance of easy and hard and will not focus on just one point of the rules.   When you get the test, scan it to see how long it is and know your strengths and your partner's strengths."   Very vague and didn't really give them an edge.   Students should learn to not prod test-writing adults and ask others their detailed questions...
