I’m fuming. In just a few months the brand new Class IV on Regents Rd has already claimed two victims that I know of. Do we need to start a list like we have for Cardiff?

First, a few weeks ago a Cyclovets rider on NB Regents was taken out by a “protective” post after crossing LJVD.

Now this rider was right hooked at a condo complex entrance. Details below, but eerily similar to the Leucadia Blvd Nov 2020 Dr Jennings Worley fatality at Moonstone Court months after a conversion to Class IV there.

The middle photo below really tells the story.

Again, on a roadway that was not known for bike crashes.

Does anyone know how this cyclist fared?

Regarding what to do: I urge the removal of the entire Class IV. There are too many crossing-conflict points on this road.  Move the parked cars back to the curb where they belong. Create a buffered Class II bike lane with door zone buffers. You think this is bad? Wait til you see the carnage the planned Class IV on Gilman in D1 will cause.

Hi Zach,
I do not.
Feel free to forward this email chain to whoever you think can and should be alerted to this ticking time bomb of a driveway/intersection.

Hi Jeff,

I know we were on copy and not the main recipient of your email, but I did want to acknowledge receipt. Do you know if police were summoned to the scene of the collision?

Today 8/30/2024 around lunch time a bike rider was hit by a car turning right.

Location in the red circle.  See photos below.

With the road going uphill and the thru traffic slightly turning left the car drivers making the right hand turn into the driveway the drivers don't seem to be able to see over the parked cars if a bike rider is in the bike lane heading south at this location.  More than once I have had to slam on my brakes, to avoid running into the car turning in the driveway when I am in the bike lane.

Maybe remove the two parked cars just north of the driveway, so the car driver can see what's on his right before the turn?

TIA,

Jeff Dosick

I wish UCSD would rip out the damnable Class IVs on and around campus and restore the perfectly safe and user-friendly Class II bike lanes. Bandvocates can't spell "right hook" or "left cross" or use the term in a complete sentence..

All,

I just found a comment I had made about this exact location back in May. So predictable. I have a new suggestion too. See below.

Link to FB post where I made above comment:
The photo above was taken facing southbound by Coach Darryl MacKenzie (CCed) back in May. It shows the Aug 31 Regents Rd. right hook collision location.

* Cyclist was in bikeway right of parked cars.
* Car was in road left of parked cars.

See where there is a break in the red curb and green paint in the bikeway? There’s a driveway there.

What could possibly go wrong? It did. Exactly as I had predicted just a few weeks ago. The car turned right and hit the cyclist in the green paint area. I bet neither was even aware of the other until the collision.

By the way, cyclists are vulnerable here not only to right hooks, but also to motorists coming out of the driveway. Those drivers waiting to turn right/south are likely focused on checking to see if there is any southbound traffic in the general travel lane and are likely to not notice riders in the bikeway.

If the City refuses to move the parked cars back against the curb and replace the Regents Rd Class IV cycle tracks with double-buffered* Class II bike lanes with mixing areas at all turning conflict points, can we at least have sharrows and Bikes May Use Full Lane signs installed so riders with the sense to know to avoid this cycle trap are less likely to get harassed for riding in the #2 lane on the road?

Please let’s not wait to fix this obvious serious problem until someone is killed and their loved ones (rightfully) sue the City for negligence.

Serge

*ideally there is a door zone buffer as well as a traffic-side buffer.

I also believe this is in violation (of the spirit at least) of the new daylighting law SB 413, making it illegal in California to park within 20 feet of the approach of any marked or unmarked crosswalk, whether or not there is a red curb painted or a sign. Although the ClassIV crossing is not a crosswalk per se, the same logic applies. In fact, since bicycles move ~7-8 times faster than a pedestrian, even more than 20 ft should be clear to allow good vantage for both cyclists and drivers.  This is even worse than Leucadia Blvd / Moonstone where at least some vantage was available if both cyclist and motorist had been on high alert.

Really, the only practical fix if you want to keep the same number of parking spaces and improve safety for all is to follow Serge's suggestion. You cannot even say this is a design for all ages and abilities. It is much more dangerous for an 8 yr old as well as an 80 yr old.
